I think I screwed up and made Democrats look like angry, whiny cry-babies who don't like it when the big bad Republicans use their constitutionally protected free speech.

Say Democratic Party not Democrat Party
Friday, November 10, 206

"Democrat" is not an adjective. Look it up in the dictionary.

There is no Democrat Party, despite what the clearly partisan Warren County Election Board's challenger passes say. The Democrat National Committee doesn't exist, and the Democrat plan goes by another name.

Using Democrat in this way started with Republicans in the 1940s, and used "liberally" by Sen. Joseph McCarthy during the height of his paranoid witch hunts. It is a deliberate slur against members of the Democratic party. It screams "rat." It is an insult. It denies the Democrats of their legitimate connection to the word "democracy."

George W. Bush claims the campaigning is over, that he wants to work with the new Democratic congressional majority, but he betrays his lies when the first thing he says in his press conference on Wednesday is, "The Democrat Party had a good night last night." It's exactly like greeting your new black co-worker with the N-word during your introduction.

It will be nice working with you, Mr. President ... or not.

I actually called the editor to withdraw it, but he said I shouldn't just sit in my closet and let them get to me in silence. I just wish it didn't seem like I was inviting Repub's to do it more.

I'm sorry I made us look bad. Really sorry.

1. I think it's good
I think you're just experiencing self-doubt at seeing yourself in print is all. I think it's a good letter and I didn't even know this nonsense started with McCarthy. Comparing it to the 'n' word might be a big hyperbolic, but it makes the point. You did good. Pat yourself on the back.

(I don't say things I don't mean, ask anybody)

2. According to the New Yorker
"it got a boost in 1940 from Harold Stassen, the Republican Convention keynoter that year, who used it to signify disapproval of such less than fully democratic Democratic machine bosses as Frank Hague of Jersey City and Tom Pendergast of Kansas City."

This is a great article, definitely worth a read. I almost plagiarized right from it.

Thanks for the "experiencing self doubt" observation. You're probably right. I just want to be the best writer there ever was, and I used to be much better. I'm just out of practice. The timing of this letter couldn't be better, though. That's what the editor told me, and I tend to agree.

3. Good LTTE...
keep hitting back. Never stop.

My only suggestion would be to slip in a derogatory comment about repugs everytime you write a LTTE. Remind people about their corruption.

In other words, cockpunch them every chance you get.

You want me to call them a Repug? In my opinion that is as effective as calling a slave holder honky.

I don't want to name call anyone. I just wrote a letter to the editor saying that's bad. If I accused (or observed) something about their policies or practices (other than the Democrat Party slur), it would be off topic, IMO
