What would our founders say about our modern problems?
It is our true policy to steer clear of entangling alliances with any portion of the foreign world.
George Washington

My first wish is to see this plague of mankind, war, banished from the earth.
George Washington

Over grown military establishments are under any form of government inauspicious to liberty, and are to be regarded as particularly hostile to republican liberty.
George Washington

Conquest is not in our principles. It is inconsistent with our government.
Thomas Jefferson

Every generation needs a new revolution.
Thomas Jefferson

I abhor war and view it as the greatest scourge of mankind.
Thomas Jefferson

Merchants have no country. The mere spot they stand on does not constitute so strong an attachment as that from which they draw their gains.
Thomas Jefferson

All wars are follies, very expensive and very mischievous ones.
Benjamin Franklin

Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both.
Benjamin Franklin

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.
Benjamin Franklin

Wars are not paid for in wartime, the bill comes later.
Benjamin Franklin

It is to be regretted that the rich and powerful too often bend the acts of government to their own selfish purposes.
Andrew Jackson

I am one of those who do not believe that a national debt is a national blessing, but rather a curse to a republic; inasmuch as it is calculated to raise around the administration a moneyed aristocracy dangerous to the liberties of the country.
Andrew Jackson

"If ever time should come, when vain and aspiring men shall possess the highest seats in Government, our country will stand in need of its experienced patriots to prevent its ruin."
Samuel Adams

"The Constitution shall never be construed...to prevent the people of the United States who are peaceable citizens from keeping their own arms." (Sorry, I had to add that one)
Samuel Adams

America does not go abroad in search of monsters to destroy.
John Quincy Adams

Where annual elections end where slavery begins.
John Quincy Adams

I believe there are more instances of the abridgement of freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments by those in power than by violent and sudden usurpations.
James Madison

If Tyranny and Oppression come to this land, it will be in the guise of fighting a foreign enemy.
James Madison

No nation could preserve its freedom in the midst of continual warfare.
James Madison

To establish any mode to abolish war, however advantageous it might be to Nations, would be to take from such Government the most lucrative of its branches.
Thomas Paine

War involves in its progress such a train of unforeseen and unsupposed circumstances that no human wisdom can calculate the end. It has but one thing certain, and that is to increase taxes.
Thomas Paine

6. That response refers to one the most VALUABLE insights of your post (IMHO)
The fact that very little 'bad stuff' confronts us
which the 'Founding Fathers' haven't already WARNED US
to be wary of.

SAME people, SAME mindsets, SAME snake oil...just different
words and technology than 280 years ago.

The string quartet may evolve into MTV, but the song remains the same.

2. Great quotes.
And I wouldn't apologize for the gun quote.

It's fitting enough.

Besides, I think the past few years have tempered some peoples' taste for sterner gun control measures.

4. Thanks. It was my response to freeper assholes who call us traitors and such.
Edited on Fri Nov-10-06 03:21 AM by MGD
We are the true defenders of freedom and liberty and all that is good in America. They are the traitors to the constitution; they are the traitors to America and that is why their asses were so soundly "thumped" last Tuesday.
