President Bush breaks bread with Speaker-to-be Nancy Pelosi in the Oval Office.
WASHINGTON - A humbled President Bush welcomed Rep. Nancy Pelosi to an Oval Office lunch yesterday, a startling about-face from the name calling of just last week.

In fact, the arrival of Pelosi at the White House as a partner in government came less than 24 hours after Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld was dismissed and ushered out of the same office.

Both actions were political aftershocks from this week's election that put Democrats in charge of the House and Senate.

Bush hosted the lunch with Pelosi and the Democrats' No. 2, Rep. Steny Hoyer, in a private dining room off the Oval Office. Instead of political insults, Bush and Pelosi passed plates of food during the one-hour meal that was described as polite, productive and pragmatic.
