4. Ahhh that would take pages...
From pointing out that Senator Such-and-Such is not a "real" Democrat, to trying to paint Madam Speaker as a flip flopper...

My question is can't we stay united for just a little longer?

At least until theyre sworn in for God's sake?

We have no idea how this Congress is going to behave, and personally (call me foolishly optimistic) I think there will be a little something for everyone

5. Sorry, but it's naive to think the rethugs are going to change or give up on their tactics.
That's why so many of us around here are pushing for impeachment.

The time to play nice was over a very long time ago.

7. I'm not arguing about impeachment
Although I think impeachment is a tactical error - by the time the hearings are through we'll be looking at early 2010...if we want to take legal action I think war crimes would be a much smarter route...

But right now Congress has to establish a few quick landslide victories that win points in the public's eyes. Armour for troops. Increased Minimum Wage. Those kinds of things. Establish credibility first, then go after bigger fish.

Alot of people have an axe to grind and some rightfully so. It's just that some have grinded that axe right down to the wood and in just 24 hours (We don't even take control till January!).

It's all about timing which it seems many cannot comprehend.

9. It's temporary insanity.
Rahm Emmanuel came out of the gate pissing on the liberal wing of the party, which hurt people who work really, really hard for this victory.

But I think things will settle down pretty soon.

10. Apparently there will now be a Purity Test for Dems
Failure to pass the Purity Test will result in (a) one's DU posting privileges being revoked, (b) expulsion from the Democratic Party, and (c) revocation of one's First Amendment right to free speech.

And apparently, the first item on the Purity Test is a pledge of allegiance to Impeachment.

11. No "Purity Test"???!!!!
I must have missed the4 sarcasm aviatar that you obviously meant to include as part of your post.

Of course there will be NO purity test for Democrats!!!!!

WE WOULD NEVER STAND FOR SUCH A THING!!!!

However, MANY of us do feel that it is important -- VITAL -- to adhere to our principles, and to NEVER FORGET that Bush and Cheneye and Rice and Rummy are GUILTY OF THE MOST SERIOUS HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS EVER!!!!!

I have been called part of the "frothing finge" just because I happen to think that my party MUST hold the current cabal/thug/regime ACCOUNTABLE FOR WHAT IT HAS DONE abroad and domestically!!

Some of us want to speak the TRUTH TO POWER.

Sadly, it appears that others of us want to go along to get along.

13. Feeling a little self-righteous, frothing?
Edited on Fri Nov-10-06 02:44 PM by dbaker41
I put no sarcasm emoticon in my post because it was not intended sarcastically. The self-righteous wing of DU is all aflame with impeachment, and anyone who disagrees is deemed inferior, both morally and politically. We just WON an election and people who ought to be celebrating are busy tearing down the coalition that won the damn election. All the hundreds of calls for immediate impeachment, with high phrases like "speaking truth to power" (God, is that the **most** overused phrase in DU history?) and "adhering to principle," conveniently forget the political realities.

I emphatically DO NOT advocate "going along to get along." We don't have to do that. We have majorities in both the House and Senate. What we do NOT have yet are (a) HARD EVIDENCE OF CRIMES, even if we all know he's guilty; and (b) the votes to convict and remove. Without those two, any - AND I MEAN ANY - talk of impeachment is premature and will get us relegated to permanent minority status. The Pukes learned that the hard way with Bill Clinton (not permanent minority, until hopefully now, but it sure as hell hurt their cause). Seems to me some people here need to learn it as well.

I for one am sick of the bullshit here. We haven't even got our people officially in office yet and you're already screaming for impeachment. Using all the high holy phrases in the world doesn't change the fact that it's waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay premature.

Bake

Edited for typo.

14. Good Post
I posted along time ago that the if the Dems take the congress back they should forsake impeachment for passing laws to benefit the American people, and use the threat of an "overwhelming" exercise of oversight to keep Bush away from the veto pen. Predictably I was called stupid, naive, a Republican, and possibly a minion of Satan (its nice to see the anti impeachment wing of DU much more vocal now then back then). The ironic thing is that the Dems have taken impeachment off the table, and the bitching still has not stopped.

18. Many of us in the "self-righteous, frothing" camp here at DU ...
... have been Democrats for a long time. We remember Clinton making the strategic choice to "work with the opposition" for the good of America and allowing all the Reagan and Bush I crimes to be swept under the rug. It was a mistake. The same, foul rot returned in eight short years, stronger than ever. What's more, Clinton's legislative achievements were mediocre, at best. The "let's sweep it all under the rug for the good of the country" strategy was an utter failure.

We "self-righteous, frothing" Democrats don't want to see the same thing happen again. This time there must be serious public, political, and criminal consequences for the members of this administration who perpetrated these crimes against the Constitution and against humanity. We are determined to see that the neocons are driven from government in disgrace. What's so bad about that?

As for the timing issue, I assume that our leaders are formalizing their strategies for the upcoming Congress right now. This, then, is the right time for us to be talking to them and to one another about what, exactly, we should do and when we should do it. Impeachment may be premature, but discussing impeachment certainly is not.

17. There are two fights going on.
The first is the ongoing discussion as to whether it's a better strategy to impeach now or let Bush swing in the wind. The second more serious fight is an attempt to drive Dean from the chair and put the DLC back in charge now that the party has started to recover.
