Preemptive disclaimer: This is not about somebody's private life. It, as with so many themes here, is about the inner workings of hypocrisy and propaganda in the wingnut world. His granddaughter was lauded up-up-and-away recently for her adoring video of grandpops. Now it turns out that she is SEALING his documents, which he put NO restrictions on, to keep his kids' golddigging secret-------TOO LATE!!1

(Oh, besides his UFOs, women, whiskey, mobster pals, ribaldry...)

We had already seen his hardcore wingnuttiness revised back, back to a more cuddly and moderate image. But any time wingnut propaganda can be exposed, as here: FINE!!1

Strange Fruit
Senator Barry Goldwater's kin try to seal embarrassing letters about them from public view. Way to respect the great man's wishes!

By Stephen Lemons

...With the ink barely dry on "Goldwater Uncut" (Stephen Lemons, October 19), New Times' cover story on the real Arizona icon, Barry Goldwater's brood stormed the Arizona Historical Foundation, repository of the late U.S. senator's personal and political papers, demanding its Board of Directors seal correspondence on file between Barry Sr. and his family. ....

Rather than C.C.'s G-rated tales of how Goldy once gave her a miniature donkey, or her mom Joanne Goldwater's plaint that Goldy was emotionally distant, "Goldwater Uncut" explored the senator's affection for the ladies, Old Crow bourbon and sports cars. The piece delved into the senator's belief in UFOs, his ribald sense of humor, his friendships with local mobsters and his constant annoyance at the pettiness and money-grubbing of his kids. ....

Though C.C. examined the Foundation's archives for the film, she claims she and the rest of the family had no idea that such correspondence was in them until they read the New Times story. ....

Read how Goldy handed out $70K in one three-month period to his kids. Peruse his complaints about his offspring's insatiable appetite for cash. Study one of Joanne's letters egging her dad to break up his mom's trust and distribute the funds. View Goldy's letters to Cynthia Ross (C.C.'s name before she assumed the influential Goldwater mantle; her mother's Goldy's eldest daughter), tut-tutting her about her ambitions for a TV career. Finally, look over the gut-wrenching Q&A Barry Jr. participated in for one of his sons' school assignments, in which Barry Jr. describes his jones for nose candy.

You'd have to be irony-deficient not to catch the paradox. It's unlikely this dirty laundry would've been aired to this extent if: 1) C.C. had not exploited the family angle in Goldwater on Goldwater, while overlooking what she deemed unflattering; and 2) the Goldwater family had not moved to seal heretofore open and unrestricted docs.

Goldwater Uncut
You've seen the G-rated HBO documentary on the Arizona legend, but there was so much more to Goldy than that

By Stephen Lemons

.... ...short version: Back when he was Bird-dogger in Chief, John F. Kennedy spotted a future conquest on the arm of some Swedish diplomat or general during a White House function. Determined to grant the curvaceous young thing a personal tour of the Oval Office, JFK had her tailed by a lackey, who later reported that he had followed the dame right to the digs of the archconservative senator from Arizona, Barry M. Goldwater. ....

...anathema to granddaughter C.C. Goldwater, whose acclaimed biodoc Mr. Conservative: Goldwater on Goldwater continues on HBO until the end of this month. C.C. produced and narrated the effort, which portrays her grandfather as a crusty but lovable gentleman-politician who had no libido past fathering C.C.'s mom, Joanne, and Joanne's brothers and sister. Sure, her grandpa ("Paka," she called him) had gal pals, but would he have bedded one of them? Why, never!

"He never cheated on his wife," insists C.C. ... ....
