Madison, WI losing AAR!!!!
Clear Channel is changing the format of WXXM 92.1 from progressive talk to...get this...FOX SPORTS! WTF?!?!?

http://www.themic921.com/pages/statement.html

They already canned The Pro Show (local morning show that spoke to local issues) and the Forward Forum (Saturday local programming focusing on LGBT issues among other things). I'm so pissed I can't see straight. Going to email from home...ARRRGH! :grr:

1. That's terrible, but as a former long term Wisconsinite 1959-
1996 I am stealing the "Beerbratistan" thing because I love it.

2. Similar thing happened in NYC market in 2001.
The Jewish Forward leased, then sold WEVD (progressive talk format) to the ABC network who in turn made it the NYC affiliate of ESPN-radio (all sports).

3. Stupid, stupid, stupid!!!
There's a thread on the Wisconsin board about it.

Currently, WXXM is getting very good ratings (3.7 in the Summer ratings book, 11th place overall). It's probably the best performing progressive talk station in the country, aside from KPOJ in Portland.

And Madison already has a FOX Sports affiliate (WTLX), although the signal in Madison is not the best and it gets virtually no ratings whatsoever.

Clear Channel does own FOX Sports, but they have flipped a few FOX Sports stations to progressive talk in Albuquerque, Akron, Denver and Miami. Why they are doing this, especially since they already have a sports station in town, is just baffling.

I put up an article about it this morning, and am still trying to get more info about this:

4. Same thing happened yesterday in NO.
The company that owns WWL (and five or six other local media outlets) switched from AAR to "WWL on demand" - which means that they will repeat day old programs from the other WWL stations.

I tried to call programming many times yesterday - no one in programing answered. Same today. One receptionist finally tried to transfer me to a "comment line" - but of course nothing there either.

Oh, and WWL programs Rush and Repub-lite local drivel - although they were excellent at providing info immediately after Katrina.

I told one person that answered the phone that I would file an FCC complaint stating that this company owns too many media outlets for such a small area, and that they have eliminated the area's only progressive voice.

If anyone else wants to call and complain, the number is 504-593-6376. Please do if you can.

5. what a shame, and what a stupid decision
How could AAR not do better in Madison--from what I've heard, the Midwest's center of liberalism--than FOX sports?

I'm really sorry to hear this. I'd have thought that AAR would be wildly successful in Madison.

6. WXXM DID do well in Madison!

11th place overall, 3.7 share in the Summer book! Compared to other stations in the market, they were one of the top stations in the market! And they got better ratings than the previous two music formats on 92.1!

FOX Sports, on its current Madison affiliate, doesn't even show up in the ratings!

Sure, they may make more money doing sports and leasing time to obscure sports teams (which is what I think this is about) but no way they'll be able to top that rating with FOX Sports.

7. That's why I said, over in the WI board
that I smelled a rat. I think Clear Channel is being vindictive...they own most of the radio stations in Madison. They should have flipped their 96.3 country station nobody seems to listen to (most country fans listen to Q106). If they don't reverse this, I hope WORT (small community station) takes on local host Lee Rayburn's show...it was wonderful having a progressive show focusing on local issues in the morning.

9. Its very successful.
But frankly, its a mismatch with Clear Channel. Hopefully things will work out to keep Air America on another station.

10. Clear Channel operates quite a few progressive talk stations
They've had luck in quite a few markets pairing them up with their other talk stations. Some CC progressive talk stations are among the best airing the format.

It seems like this format flip is part of some radio get-rich-quick scheme. Sometimes, stations can do well selling ad time for local sports play-by-play. Though I wonder who's stupid enough to advertise on a college volleyball broadcast.

:wtf:

I'm sure another station will step in and pick up The Mic's programming. The Mic did very well. I've heard that Stephanie Miller was #1 in her time slot, and I don't find that hard to believe. Somebody's gonna bite.

8. Here's an article from the Capital Times
http://www.madison.com/tct/mad/topstories/index.php?ntid=106922&ntpid=0

"The Mic" is getting disconnected.

Clear Channel Radio's Madison division announced today that talk radio station WXXM/FM 92.1, "The Mic," will drop its progressive talk format at the end of the year, including shows on the liberal radio network Air America. Effective Jan. 1, the station will be part of the Fox Sports Radio network.

In a statement posted on the station's Web site this morning, Clear Channel Madison Vice President Jeff Tyler said the new Fox Sports station will complement Clear Channel's other local sports talk station, WTSO/AM 1070 (ESPN Radio), by focusing more on high school and collegiate sports.

11. More Evidence That Commercial Progressive/Liberal Radio Is Not Viable
There is a ready market of over 40% of the populace in even the reddest of areas that are not currently served by political talk radio. What every business model requires, a ready-made market.

Problem is, the money boys (advertisers, station owners) are from the other side of the political divide, and most apparently would prefer to lose money. Even worse, they are now apparently buying up AAR affiliates with good numbers in order to push them off the air. No station, no problem.

Why people expect power to support those talking truth to power is beyond me.

Instead of trying to ‘fight the last war’, that is, model progressive talk radio after Reich-Wing radio, a different (and not really innovative), approach is needed.

This approach is . . . . use the NPR model.

In larger, left leaning cities, commercial Progressive radio will be viable due to the critical mass of advertisers. In smaller, or redder, markets, where most of the advertisers are prejudiced, funding would come from the ‘Corporation For Progressive Radio’ to offset losses.

As Liberals/Progressives, we would need to donate $100/200 a year to the corporation (I used to donate this much to NPR). If 1/6 of Kerry voters donated $100/yr., $1 B a year could be raised.

Along with the above, ownership of stations should be the priority, or this sorry situation will simply continue. With an adequately funded CPR, when a station comes up for sale, they would be ready. On-line funding drives could even be effected to raise funds to outbid the Christo/Corporatist oligarchy.

. . .

My belief is that until those in the Red areas (Phoenix, Missoula, Atlanta, etc. etc.) are provided access to an alternative to Reich-Wing propaganda radio, Progressive politicians will make limited inroads. Some discount the effect of Reich-Wing propaganda radio on the political shift, and dumbing down, of the electorate, particularly the ‘working class’. I do not. Radio is low cost (for the consumer), convenient, and pervasive among the ‘working class’.

One other change is that the on-air ‘personalities’ would need to accept that they are part of a movement, and park their ego, and need for $1 M/yr paychecks, at the door.

My experience with all cities, and particularly ‘Red’ cities (St. Louis, Kansas City, Denver, Des Moines, Albuquerque), is that the older/university neighborhoods are ‘Blue’, surrounded by ‘Red’ suburbs which are the enclaves of the middle and ‘working’ classes. That is, the part of the electorate that has been consistently voting against their best interest. Therefore, the primary strategy would be to ‘serve’ these areas. The ‘Blue’ would provide a critical mass of funds, with the CPR providing funds to keep the enterprise ‘just in the black’.

A secondary strategy would be a salient into smaller markets with larger universities (Columbia, MO, Springfield,. MO, Iowa City/Cedar Rapids, IA, Fort Collins, CO) and therefore a younger demographic. The dynamic in these smaller cities would be similar to the larger cities, with the relatively large progressive base proving the revenue to operate nearly self-sufficient.

A third, and probably most important, strategy, will be an air-drops into (typically ‘Red’) smaller cities that are rural regional centers (Quincy, IL, Topeka, KS, Waterloo, IA, Quad Cities, IA). These operations would probably require the most funds from the CPR.
