Former OSU Chimps Living in Unhealthy Conditions

Reported by Tracy Townsend

For more than 20 years they were critical to research at the Ohio State University. When it was time for retirement OSU's chimpanzees and monkeys were sent to an animal refuge in San Antonio,Texas.

After the move, two of the chimps, Kermit and Bobby, died and a monkey escaped.

Trouble for the chimps didn't end there: last month the Texas Attorney General seized control of the sanctuary, citing health and hygiene problems.

10TV was met by the smell, a stench really, that permeates the air there.

"There's rat feces all over, everywhere," said worker Klaree Boose.

3. Calling Primarily Primates an "animal refuge" is like calling
Rikers Island a Club Med getaway.

5. Until recently, Wallace Swett, Jr was the President.
I do believe he's been ordered to step down, however.

6. Check the PETA website...
they were instrumental in getting a court injunction around a month ago against the owner. The facilities was put into receivership and a nationally known wildlife rehaber was sent in to evalute the animals and the conditions they were living in.

The guy who ran the place -- Wally -- was a damn drunk who warehoused his animals in the worst conditions and refused to get medial treatment for the most sick of them.

Last I heard they were in the process of finding homes for as many of the animals as possible and making the facility better for the ones who will remain.

7. Sorry. I won't help PETA by upping their click count.
