A true grassroots campaign in NH. Way of the future.
Howard Dean mentioned her campaign at the press conference Wednesday, along with Jerry McNerney's campaign as an example of real grassroots with very little support from the party committees.

This is the goal we should seek, campaigns on the ground, not so dependent on the old media. The columnist gives kudos to DFA in NH.

This kind of campaign is one of the reasons my hubby and I are active in DFA. The organizing on the ground continues, and grows.

"Carol Shea-Porter's stunning defeat of Congressman Jeb Bradley Tuesday was much more than just another upset amid a Democratic sweep. Her win validated one of the implicit promises of the state's presidential primary: the promise that says if you have the right message at the right moment, then even if you don't have the most money, you can win.

And yet her hard work paid off as much as any slick television ad could have. Reporter Daniel Barrick told some of this story in yesterday's Monitor, describing how "instead of hours spent calling potential donors, she preferred to troll for votes in social clubs of West Manchester."

"One other piece of Shea-Porter's victory can't be left out, the part that built on the work of Howard Dean's presidential campaign.

Shea-Porter was a Wes Clark supporter, but many of the Democracy for New Hampshire organizers who became lieutenants in Shea-Porter's victory came straight from the meet-ups of 2003 that helped Dean (before his campaign derailed) build undreamt-of momentum. That campaign made an art of decentralization, investing in its volunteers by teaching them the skills to spread the message of the campaign or even to become candidates themselves."
