Katie Fired! (Per National Enquirer, so consider the source)
But still, this is a fun one!

I have no link since I actually *bought* the silly magazine due to this headline (and no, its NOT a normal event for me) -- I'll try to excerpt the best parts....

(snip)

In top secret meetings, her bosses at the "CBS Evening News" have drawn up contingency plans to remove the 49-year-old former "Today" star from the anchor chair.

(more snip about moving her to "60 Minutes" or "The Early Show")

(more snip about being in last place, probably staying there, and her not even knowing she's been fired yet)

A close source added, "There's absolute panic now that this was a bad mistake that needs to be fixed."

(more snip about how upset she is about being such a ratings loser, she's getting advice, her bosses are pissed, and the critics aren't being nice)

(more snip about how they're giving other women less tv time to "spotlight" her, and now everybody hates her)

"The important sweeps rating period is upon them now. In their secret meetings, the network bosses decided Katie is fired if she can't bring the broadcast up to at least second place."

(more snip about public spokespeople swearing everything is fine)

But a studio insider concluded: "While everyone is hoping for a miracle, it's going downhill fast."

2. This may be the very first time in my life I hope the Enquirer is accurate--and the first
and possibly only time I spend money for one.

Thanks for the heads up, I'll check it out.

8. limbo
I think they broke the Limbaugh drug story, too. Weren't they also talking about divorce between Chimpy and Pickles over an affair with Condi?

3. Did they really expect that over-the-hill republican cheerleader
to be able to get people to tune in?

I don't even want her recipe for tuna and noodles let alone her take on the war in Iraq. That may sound stereotypical but:

1. I'm female; and
2. She's lamer than a horse with four broken legs.

19. Yeah, but she's PERKY!
I do think she is kind of cute, but have never watched the CBS evening news since she has been on it.

I'm also almost over the hill so my opinion doesn't count as far as the advertisers care.

25. "over the hill"?
Edited on Fri Nov-10-06 04:48 PM by Bridget Burke
I haven't watched CBS news since Her Perkiness took over. But I most of the ads were for drugs! Not the good kind. The "let your MD know if you've had a heart transplant" kind.

Definitely aimed at us oldsters.

Doncha know? The young folks get their news from The Daily Show. (Which I also watch. I love to screw with the demographics.)

29. I've only seen her in the Michael J Fox interview on YouTube.
Haven't had a transplant, but have had a quadruple bypass. Maybe I should watch for the ads!

Also a fan of the Daily Show. Yup, screw the demographics!

11. It's downright CREEPY, IMHO.
I'm old enough to remember Uncle Walter announcing Nixon had resigned (just barely).

Can you imagine Wendy announcing that story?

15. Really, WTF were they thinking? But CBS is the network of propaganda.
CIA hacks, Operation Mockingbird, William Paley, Cronkite--"most trusted man in 'Merka" my ass.

Guess they think they can fool all the people all the time.

Come to think of it .....

Ed Bradley would have been real good at that anchor desk.

I'm sure the brass must have approached him on it in the past.

Edited on Fri Nov-10-06 04:23 PM by The Count
Fox cancelled 3 shows (Rich List, OC, Justice) and Couric did miserable in the ratings - so no reason to doubt this.
I guess that's another reason we need to thank Rush - wasn't he among her first guests?

Picking perky Katie to host newslite with right wing gasbag free-speech segments was a HUGE mistake.

36. There ya go. "Journalist."
Idiot CBS folk picked a "talk show" host! What did they think would happen?

Amanpour is the real deal. She'd be great.
But somehow, I can't see her agreeing to be tied down to a desk. She is a true news hound.
Goes where the news is - and isn't afraid to do so.

When I tuned in last night I felt justified. Any local cable channel news anchor is better than that fer crisakes.

CBS use to be my channel of choice for network news but no more. Couric is just unwatchable when one is searching out the news of the day.

32. Didn't she refuse at one point to travel to the Middle East?
Unlike the other anchors who go where ever there is a story, I remember her telling the network that she wouldn't go because she's a single mom and it would be too dangerous, etc...
If true, probably doesn't help ratings when her counterparts are seen flying around the world, reporting live, and she's back in her comfy anchor chair picking and choosing who her reporters from the field will be (male vs female, etc...).
Wonder if her refusal to travel to hot spots has anything to do with not wanting to show female reporters? Can't make it look like she is the only female not willing to go to these kind of places.

33. CBS should have tried Keith Ollberman
Isn't is obvious that CBS should have tried to steal Keith from MSNBC. He is the only newscaste that I know that has the right combination of gravitas, in the tradition of Walter Cronkite and Burrow, with the style that is current and fresh. I think they shouod pay Keith anything he wants.. He could easily raise CBS news to #1!
