Sweeney's wife beating fiasco continues

ALBANY -- The State Police have launched an internal probe into the potential leak of information about last year's emergency call from Rep. John Sweeney's residence by his wife, an agency official said Thursday.
Details of the 911 call on Dec. 2, 2005, by Gaia Sweeney emerged in a document believed to be a State Police report that became public during the congressman's failed re-election campaign.

The public airing of the report may have contributed to voter support for political neophyte Kirsten Gillibrand, a Democrat who came from behind to topple the Republican incumbent on Tuesday.

Last week, Sweeney said he assigned his lawyer, E. Stewart Jones Jr., to do a private investigation into how the document, which he calls fabricated, got released.

Is it just me or is he a really bad loser?

2. Sweeney is the one
who wanted the "real report released" and then his lawyer advised against it.

He agreed to a $500,000 settlement with the woman, but it was in installments that would continue through the election. If she did any tell-all things, he wouldn't give her any more money.

So if she wanted the full $500,000, she needed to stay quiet through the election.

Edited to add: Okay, I guess it's both. ;-)

7. A couple of days before the election
they had a little call in on the local cable news station and someone called in and asked about the wife abuser. The anchor had to ask which Republican are you referring to, there is more than one being accused of wife abuse.

It was a very funny yet very sad moment.

It's certainly not funny to his poor wife.

But, dang... the hypocrisy keeps on giving...

6. Good answer from the Gillibrand team
Jones has said that he would target Howard Wolfson, a Democratic political strategist assisting Gillibrand. Wolfson said he hasn't heard from Jones and has no intention of cooperating with any inquiries by him.

"The election is over," Wolfson said. "We are now in the governing mode."
