Boldly "going forward" vs Carefully "backing away".
People who run from an attacking bear are likely to be mauled.

People who try to outrun a cougar can easily end up being "lunch"..

I am totally aggravated by all the winners who are stampeding to microphones, only to announce that they are "ready to move forward".

Everything stands on what came before, and without knowing details of what got you where you are, how can you just careen forward?

That smacks of exuberant ignorance.

When a company's failing and an auditing team is brought in, they do not make a bonfire of the company's bookkeeping records and "start fresh for the future". They meticulously pore over the boring details and ferret out all the errors and omissions. People who are responsible for those errors are ruthlessly questioned and failing to convince the auditors that it was an "honest" mistake, these people get fired and or jailed.

People who have finally been restored to a leadership position after years of wandering aimlessly, should choose their stances carefully and never turn around and walk away from their enemy/adversary. It's wise to back away carefully, while planning your next move...not to turn around and run helter-skelter.......forward.

4. the context was, I thought, don't advance past a defeated
but still alive enemy. Spend the time to dispatch them there on the spot. Or, in nicer language, "kick them while they're down".

For us, we have wounded the GOP elephant, but we haven't killed it. We must kill it off.

5. Didn't Shakespeare say it?
If you attack the king you must kill the king?

I strongly advocate kicking them while they're down :)
