Congress is an institution of compromise. Our representatives bring their views and concerns to the table and are challenged to compromise, obstruct, or sit on their hands. This session appears to be dominated by a decidedly progressive Democratic majority. They will be challenged to pull together with their political partners to advance legislation or effect the changes they promised in the campaign.

Hope the process doesn't turn folks off, but, it's still the best political system in the world, in my view.

4. How long before the DLC's throw their ideals
under the bus for their corporate masters?

And then call themselves 'pragmatists'.

Like the Vichy.

24. Compromise makes for good law-making
as long as the will of the governed is considered.

We do vote for 'representatives', after all. They should reflect the will of the constituents in their district.

Not the lobbyist that shows up with the biggest donation.

Inform me, please.

I'm not trying to contradict you, I just don't understand what point you're trying to make.

Can you be a little more direct? :)

6. Yes we all know its coming
But hopefully everyone here at DU will keep hounding those congresscritters who do compromise. The more noise we make, the more the congresscritters had better be aware they need to compromise wisely. They should tread very lightly when compromising on what little we US citizens have left.

22. there I agree. so much of our basic rights have been compromised away
under the republican guard's occupation of our democracy.

The equation's changed, though. Most of our favorite Democratic sons are set to assume their past positions of authority and will effectively defend our principles as others try to tear them down. I have great confidence when I look over the new majority.

13. Whew! I'm glad somebody else noticed that.
This "cult" realizes some things are worth compromising on. Others are not.

of course there are things worth standing in the door to protect and defend. I expect our party will collectively do just that.

I'm thinking of the votes we'll need to pass legislation we might support. I don't think gridlock is a good strategy at this point. There is the option of obstruction if there is some pernicious move by the Executive which gains momentum in the Congress, but there is also room to advance meaningful legislation. Republicans assumed they had absolute power and blocked EVERYTHING from the Democratic minority. There are reams of meritorious projects and initiatives locked up because of their obstinance. We will likely go back to the proven strategy of investigations, supoenas, and pressure on the Executive to get them to buckle on key legislation, and on Iraq as well. We know how to do this. I just hope folks are prepared for the giv-and-take of politics. It's not pretty, but Democrats know how to get things done for the people, even with a bonehead in the White House.

17. I think we can do both.
There are some things pretty much everyone wants. There are other things we'll just have to do our way and fight for. The thing is, there is NO precedent for our current situation. We are making this up as we go along. We'll have to play it as it goes, but we cannot compromise our integrity or justice. Not now.

Kind of exciting, isn't it?

20. me too. I know our party when we're in power; either in the WH or in Congress
Both Pelosi and Reid share most of the principles of progressives and are not in any position to stand in the way of them either.

America is in good hands.
