47. They had a clip of him at 17 as a guest on "I've Got A Secret" in '65!
I caught that at the beginning of the program - his secret was that he had designed a computer that could compose music. The computer was absolutely primitive - nice little slice of history. I thought he looked a little young and when they said he was only seventeen I about flipped. The man is obviously a genius.

Warlord: No Better Friend, No Worse Enemy
Ilario Pantano

Ilario Pantano argues that the U.S., as a society, has moved away from embracing offensive warfare. He says that in Iraq and Afghanistan, because of moral and political considerations, the U.S. military has restrained itself from completely destroying the enemy and winning the war. Mr. Pantano also argues that the volume of media coverage of the war on terror has overwhelmed the American public's ability to process what is happening. As a result, he says, an increasing number of people are tuning out the war. This talk was hosted by the John Locke Foundation in Wilmington, North Carolina.

Ilario Pantano served with the Marines during the 1991 Gulf War. He rejoined the Marines after 9/11 and went to Iraq in 2004 after acquiring the rank of second lieutenant. "Warlord" is Mr. Pantano's first book.

The God Delusion
Richard Dawkins

From Randolph-Macon Woman's College in Lynchburg, Virginia, Richard Dawkins argues that there is no rational or moral reason to believe in God or any other supernatural higher power. Professor Dawkins also reads selections from his new book, talks about his love for science, and answers questions from the Randolph-Macon audience.

Richard Dawkins is the Charles Simonyi Professor of the Public Understanding of Science at Oxford University. He is the author of many books, including "The Selfish Gene," "The Blind Watchmaker," and "Unweaving the Rainbow." For more on Professor Dawkins and his work, visit www.richarddawkins.net.

Secdef: The Nearly Impossible Job of Secretary of Defense
Charles Stevenson

During a discussion at Politics and Prose, Charles Stevenson examines what he considers to be the most difficult job in Washington, DC, the Secretary of Defense. As national security adviser to four U.S. senators, Mr. Stevenson has had the opportunity to observe those who have held Defense Secretary position. Mr. Stevenson reveals that since its creation in 1947, only half of the 21 men who have held the post have served more than 18 months. Others who have held the Secretary of Defense post have resigned either in frustration or disappointment. During the talk, Mr. Stevenson categorizes individuals who have held this post as revolutionaries, firefighters, or team players. Mr. Stevenson analyzes each type, defines characteristics, and explains how particular Defense Secretaries Donald Rumsfeld, Robert McNamara, and James Forrestal have done their jobs.

Charles Stevenson has observed the office of Secretary of Defense since 1960, as a defense and foreign policy adviser to four U.S. Senators. He is a professor at the National War College in Washington, DC. He also teaches at the Nitze School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University. He received a Ph.D from Harvard University, his M.A. from Fletcher School, and his B.A. from King's College.

Murder In Amsterdam: The Death of Theo van Gogh and the Limits of Tolerance
Ian Buruma

"Murder in Amsterdam" is author Ian Buruma’s exploration of the tension between the Dutch natives and the Muslim immigrants living in Holland during the 2004 murder of media personality Theo van Gogh. Mr. Van Gogh’s murderer, a Muslim, targeted the outspoken Dutchmen because he created a documentary criticizing Islam’s treatment of women. The author uses this case to argue against the commonly-held idea that Holland is a supremely tolerant nation. Politics and Prose Bookstore in Washington, DC hosted the event.

Dutch-born Ian Buruma is a professor of democracy, human rights and journalism at Bard College in New York. His other books include "Conversations with John Schlesinger" and "Occidentalism: The West in the Eyes of Their Enemies." For more information on Mr. Buruma and his work, visit www.ianburuma.com.

Afghanistan and the Troubled Future of Unconventional Warfare
Hy Rothstein

Hy Rothstein talks about the U.S. military's successes and failures in Afghanistan. Professor Rothstein argues that the U.S. military had early success over the Taliban in Afghanistan because both sides faught using conventional tactics. He says that after December 2001, however, when the fighting became unconventional, the U.S. military lost the upper hand because it continued to fight conventionally and could not adapt. The talk was hosted by the World Affairs Council. Includes Q&A.

Hy Rothstein is a senior lecturer with the Department of Defense Analysis at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. Before becoming a teacher, Professor Rothstein served 26 years with the US Army as a Special Forces officer.

Uberpower: The Imperial Temptation of America
Josef Joffe
Watch now - http://www.booktv.org/ram/feature/1006/btv102806_4b.ram

Josef Joffe talks about the role of the United States as the world's only superpower. Mr. Joffe discusses the major military actions taken by the U.S. since the decline of the USSR, including the 1991 Gulf War, the invasion of Afghanistan following 9/11, and the 2003 invasion of Iraq. He argues that while the first two were legitimate actions that enhanced the U.S.'s credibility around the world, the 2003 invasion of Iraq was not legitimate or beneficial. He also talks about German politics and European attitudes towards Americans and American culture. The talk was hosted by the Carnegie Council in New York City.

Josef Joffe is publisher and editor of Germany's Die Zeit magazine and author of "The Future of the Great Powers." He is currently a fellow at the Hoover Institution in California. For more information, visit: www.hoover.org/bios/joffe.
