Activists Rally outside Pelosi's SF office "bring our troops home"
Edited on Sat Nov-11-06 01:04 PM by DemPower
``We're out here today telling Nancy Pelosi congratulations on becoming speaker of the House,'' activist Rae Abileah said. ``Now it's time to speak for the current majority and bring our troops home.''

The rally, which drew 100 people to the downtown Federal Building, was organized by Code Pink, a Bay Area women's anti-war group formed on the eve of the Iraq invasion. In trademark pink feather boas, members chanted: ``Nancy as our speaker, be a peacekeeper,'' before delivering a basket of chocolate and dried fruits to Pelosi's 450 Golden Gate Ave. office.

They also presented a display of shoes -- children's sandals, women's heels and men's loafers -- representing the thousands of innocent civilian lives lost in Iraq.

1. I think the chorus is better directed at the goddamn Monkey, frankly
While Nancy has deservedly won the Speakership, she doesn't take it for two months yet. What's she supposed to do in the meantime? Take off her shoe and pound the desk? Come on.

Sometimes I think these demonstrations are more about the demonstraTORS than they are about the issues. Code Pink has done some great work, but they're jumping the damn gun, here.

So you aren't gonna see me joining any damn chorus. I know how Pelosi feels about this Iraqi misadventure, and I'm not going to clog her email with a 'Yeah, uh-huh...YEAH...' email just to piss on her virtual tree. IMO, it's idiotic. YMMV.

2. She should speak her intention to do the bidding of the people
This election was a mandate to bring the troops home.

She should proudly announce that as soon as she is speaker she will introduce legislation (perhaps the Kucinich/Paul/Jones/Abercrombie 'Homeward Bound' act) to bring the troops home ASAP!

The election was also a mandate for accountability. She should announce that she will be pursuing investigations and prosecution for the current administration breaking the nation's laws and shredding our constitution.

4. I think you're dead wrong.
First of all, these announcements that the election was a mandate for this or that, are bullshit. About the most one can definitively say, is that it was a mandate for change- change in Iraq and change at home. And she shouldn't be announcing much of anything yet. Why should she tip her hand to the opposition? That would be stupid. It's still a narrowly divided House, with a large blue dog contingency, and an even more narrowly divided Senate. Tactics are important.

8. I'm with you. A shitload of here-disdained MODERATES voted for this change too.
This wasn't the work of screaming lefties, though they'd like to take all the credit and demand their agenda take precedence (they will have to prepare for grave disappointment). This was the work of the great mushy middle, to include independents and a few moderate to liberal REPUBLICANS, crossing the line and pulling the lever, filling in the oval, or poking the button for CHANGE. It was an angry comment about doing nothing, about corruption, about hubris, and about bullying.

And your commentary about the BLUE DOGS is right on the money. People don't seem to realize that the Congress they elected is straddling the center with a slight right lean, thanks to those Blue Dogs. And THANKS to those Blue Dogs, who, even though they are a bit to the right for my personal tastes, they did give us the damn majority, and we would not have it without them.

Now we need to move forward and get what we can and compromise where we cannot. Tactics, and strategy.

Absolutely.

9. Just today Bush has announced he will continue the war
Edited on Sat Nov-11-06 03:53 PM by DemPower
He looks foward to working with Dem leaders to continue his war on terror in Iraq.

I think she should answer this-

They are going to continue the same nonsense if we do not stop them.

The election was clearly a mandate for change and accountability for Bush and his disasters.
The polls all show that the majority want the troops to come home.
The majority want impeachment.

The politicians are going to have to pull their heads out of the beltway and wake up to reality.

Americans are sick of Bush and his bushit war and they want him impeached and removed from office.

I wish people would quit telling us Americans don't have the stomach for it. We can handle it. Bring it on!

10. We all need to stop back seat driving
and give these guys a chance. Things aren't as easy as you make them out to be. Congress controls only the purse strings. They actually do have to work with the administration to end this war. Oh, and you shouldn't speak for all Americans.

3. Yeah, that's constructive
as the first poster to this thread noted, Pelosi doesn't even take office until January. And we need to give dems a chance to present a plan. That's not gonna happen over night.

5. She has already come out and said impeachment was off the table
and Conyers agreed with her....Isn't that a little premature?

They are not going to do anything positive unless we force them to.

Nancy Pelosi and John Conyers both voted yes for the Iran Freedom Support Act in the House.

They seem to be in the habit of appeasing Bush. We must go with the momentum of the election, not let it fade away like the Downing Street Memo and so many other things.

7. Please see my other post.
She has to keep her cards close to the vest. And neither she nor Conyers have said that investigation is off the table. If they pursue investigations and theirs overwhelming evidence to support impeachment, well, that's just something that's beyond their control, isn't it?
