Art Buchwald - Still not dead.
In fact, he's quite alive. This is no small feat, considering he unhooked his dialysis machines and said he was ready for Valhalla nearly a year ago.

Still Living It Up
Washington Hospice Benefit Features Famous Former Resident Art Buchwald

By Jose Antonio Vargas - Washington Post Staff Writer
Saturday, November 11, 2006; Page C01

///

Ethel Kennedy, a longtime friend, was there. So was Jack Valenti, who's known his old buddy since 1964. "I told Art, 'The next time you go to a hospice, die for God's sake,' " he said.

///

He had a few jokes up his sleeve, of course. To wit: "I felt like one of the pleasures of my dying was I wouldn't have to look at George Bush anymore."

///

(His book even has) an epilogue. The latter is a collection of eulogies -- "In case of being memorialized after my death, I get to read what they were going to say now," he writes -- from Bradlee, Wallace, Tom Brokaw, George Stevens Jr., Ken Starr and Buchwald's doctor, Michael Newman.

"The individual in question is, plain and simple, a fraud, a publicity-seeking, lying, greedy fraud," wrote Wallace.

1. He came to Baylor
during Watergate. The President of Students had recently sent a letter of support to Nixon. I had to attend (attendance to chapel was required)and heard him. I swear, I and a few others were the only ones laughing at his talks. I went up to him afterward and explained the situation. I was treated to the classic Buchwald laugh (through a clinched cigar). I got a signature (unfortunately now lost). I have a gift for writing comedy and he was one I always loved. He was the highlight of my time at Baylor. Anita Bryant was a low point....but that's another story.

3. We were always aghast at the "No Dancing" rules.
I am a lousy dancer, but even that wasn't a good enough reason to get me to head to Waco.

4. You don't even know
half of the stupid rules.....
I begged Mom to let me transfer (NTSU) after the first semester but she made me tough it out. God but I hated that place. The town was more liberal than the college-and that says a lot!

5. Come on! This beliongs on "Greatest"
I love Wallace's eulogy, "The individual in question is, plain and simple, a fraud, a publicity-seeking, lying, greedy fraud," I'm sure that the ever self-effacing Buchwald roared with laughter on that one.

We all know that Art may be anything, but *never* a fraud, let alone a publicity-seeking one.

You go, Art!

6. I tried, but It wouldn't let me recommend it twice...
But it sure does, Art has made me smile on too many otherwise bleak days.

9. We had a birthday last month.
I got a note yesterday in response to the card I sent, "I'm still doing it my way and I'm writing as fast as I can." :rofl: He's SUCH a gem!

11. His books ....
are but a poor reflection of his wonderful spirit. Everyone that ever met him has story. No matter who you are, you are important to him. He makes you laugh til you have tears in your eyes.

12. Note the wit and spirit of old Democratic party.
Maybe the end of the Bush era will bring an end to a complete lack of humor among Washington bigwigs.
