*This is a post to any lurking freepers/fundies/right wing trolls.

Yep, we are going to legalize gay marriage at the federal level thus rendering any state level marriage laws null and void.

Choke on that. :P

It's a civil rights issue, not a majority-rule issue.

It's ridiculous that you can be legally married on state and not another!

Btw, what you say is 100% correct. What if some states decided to legalize marijuana, yet others didn't. Hey, wait a minute, in a way that's true already. It's not one country. It's 50 states pretending to be one country at this point.

4. We ARE NOT Going To Legalize GAY MARRIAGE
We ARE going to extend Equal Protection Under the Law to all citizens.
Folks, after 12 years we need to re-learn how to frame the debate.
NOT "Legalize Marijuana" but "Provide Doctors & Patients With a Useful Theraputic Drug" or "Relieve Our Brave Peace Officers of Prosecuting Misdemeanors."
THEY have dominated the framing of the debate, so we have "Gay Marriage" and "the Death Tax" which isn't what the debate is about.
"In your face" is a GREAT way to lose the debate, by the way.

6. I agree with you that we've dropped the ball on framing the debate, but...
... we really are NOT going to establish gay marriage, even if we call it "extending equal protection of law to all citizens". I just don't see that happening anytime in the near future.

8. In The Larger Sense
My reply isn't so much about gay marriage as it is our need to reclaim the debates we have allowed the most extreme elements of our country dominate. If we do not do that we may have won the battle this year, but lost the war.

I'm absolutely under no illusions as to how difficult this is going to be. Mexico will get same-sex marriage before we do.

I'm, of course, fully supportive of legalizing same-sex marriage. But this is going to take decades.

At least two (personally speaking).

My serious guess is less than a decade - several states will follow the lead of Masachusssets and someone will seek recognition of their out of state marriage under Loving v. Virginia on federal constitutional grounds, will win, there will be relatively minor wailing, and it will be all over.

30. Now, now, that's not fair
Anyone who opposes same-sex marriage cannot get married. Any straight couple who thinks same-sex couples should have the same rights as they do should be allowed to marry.

And if you lie and say you support same-sex marriage, but are found out not to support it, your marriage is invalidated.

And it sounds a bit nutty, and I'm hardly the first person to think about it, but maybe hetero couples should stop getting married until sam-sex couples can enjoy the same rights. The wedding industry will be going nuts! Actually, they should lobby for legalized same-sex marriage; think of the increase in clientele.

26. Don't forget the Supreme Court!
It will be much harder for Bush to place far-right justices on the Court with Democrats in control of the Senate. The far right was worried that the 6-3 ruling overturning "sodomy laws" would somehow "lead to gay marriage". I don't see the connection, but what if they were right? If so, it would still be 5-4 if a case like Lawrence vs. Texas were done today. Perhaps, if the far right's fears are true, same-sex marriage will be legalized by the Supreme Court! I can hear the cries of agony from the right now. "They're doing it through the Courts and not the ballot box!!!!!" Well, they should just remember what their boy John McCain stated about who makes it to the Courts: "Elections have consequences!" The people have chosen Democrats to control the Senate. Maybe they too have had it with Bush's right wing activist judicial nominees!

35. Rather unfunny in a twisted kind of way. We know it will never happen.
And here's a secret. The Freepers know it too.

After this election, it is probably clear to the majority of gay Democrats after reading all the "wish lists", and such posts, that anything gay is a non-starter, and poison to any Democrat that utters even a joke about it.

So it is a funny joke, in reverse, you thinking OP that the Freepers would be unaware of this basic instinct of "moderate" Democrats to run from any gay issue like their ass was on fire and their hair catching. Now that we are officially in the 2008 cycle, it's God, Guns and Gays.

The republicans will be testing regularly with their gay "poke a Democrat stick" and look for the usual response.

The DLC will come up with a handy guide for our gang...."How To Get Gays To Vote For You, While You Tell Them To Fuck Off".
