That's what you'll hear the RW saying about gays. That they want "special rights." Near as I can tell, the people who want, and have, special rights, are those of the religious right themselves. They want the right to deny equal protections to people who are different from themselves. They want to be able to say only Christianity (and, what's more, THEIR version of Christianity) is the only valid religion. They want to be able to harass anyone they choose--from gays to pagans to abortion clinics, and have it considered "free speech."
Sounds like a special right to me.
They want THEIR definition of marriage (between one man and one woman) to trump every other possible definition.
They want to be able to denounce, in public, anyone not like them, without repercussions. "Hey, if I tell that 'faggot' he's going to burn in hell, that's free speech, right?"
Their churches engage in political discourse, yet the IRS investigates liberal churches that do the same thing. Their people have all but taken over the Air Force Academy. Does this mean we're going to have a bunch of religious fanatics flying over us all the time with bombs? Why doesn't that make me feel particularly comfortable?
As far as I'm concerned, they have the right to remain silent. And I dearly wish they'd learn to use it.
I don't give a DAMN about their religious views. I would like to see someone, anyone, put an end to their interference in the political arena. Laws that stem from THEIR belief system should not be imposed on the rest of us. For any reason.
Could you imagine a Druid, for example, insisting that it be made into law that no oak tree should be cut down unless it poses a potential danger to other living things? I mean, c'mon.
Their religion is THEIR OWN PRIVATE BUSINESS. It shouldn't be used to prop up blatantly prejudicial laws.
No one else gets to do that. They shouldn't either.
