Contact: Karen Finney of the DNC Press Office, 202-863-8148

WASHINGTON, Nov. 11 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The Democratic National Committee responded to news reports that John McCain is entering the 2008 presidential race today.

"If the reports are correct, we welcome John McCain to the race," said DNC Communications Director Karen Finney. "The question is, which McCain is running: the McCain who called right wing extremists like Jerry Falwell an evil influence, or the McCain who spoke at Liberty University as he attempted to cater to the far right in advance of a presidential run? Or the McCain who opposed overturning Roe vs. Wade or the McCain who said he would support South Dakota's ban? As an opportunist who supports the Bush Administration's failed policy in Iraq and changed his mind on tax cuts, a woman's right to make her own decisions about her health care, and campaign finance reform, it's hard to tell which John McCain will enter the race."

21. .
It's not even about defending himself. It was about defending his own family, his adopted young child that he should value more than his ambitions to become President.
That makes it even worse as I can't think of anything worse. Basically they singled out his kid and called it names. He should at least be principled enough to stand up for his kids. Instead, he turned into a total buttkisser and by that said it's ok to harass his child.

He will do whatever gives him a shot at the Presidency.

45. His cheeks are kinda, sorta off limits
The puffiness and the two angry red scars that plunge down the left side of his cheek in front of his ear are the result of mementos of melanoma surgery in 2000.

Nevertheless, I think his age and health problems will become an issue in the future.

to head the DNC - vision and zero fear to say what need be said. The days of simply reacting to the latest Rove tactic or fact-less Repug accusation are over - the initiative has been seized and America will be better for it. Bravo!

43. I hate to bring up this point
but, I personally think his age/health is a negative. He's already weathered some major health problems and IF he ran and won he would be heading toward 73 years of age upon taking office. Wondering if he could stand up to the rigors of the job and this would definitely be on my mind if I were Republican.

32. McCain is so full of sh*t and its showing! First he's the "Moderate" then the next thing you know
he's courting the evangelicals and extreme right. Then he says he opposes torture and ends up supporting a bill that allows torture. And who can forget the images since 2004 of him kissing George W's ass????

McCain doesn't have a chance to win in '08 and his miscalculation to hang with Bush and all the things we have seen him do in the last several years is going to be out there for all to see....

42. From the dkos you linked to, here's a gift for us all from McCain...
"Americans wouldn't pick lettuce for even $50/hour."

It's such bullshit - absolute complete and total bullshit.

I wouldn't prime tobacco for that, but I'd damn sure pick lettuce ALL DAY, every day, for 50 bucks an hour. That line will resonate like crazy with those of us who've lived making $10 to $15 an hour, probably even people making $20, $25 bucks an hour!

We need to remember this line, and repeat it as often as necessary.

48. Must We Be Negative?
I guess so. But let's have standards.

Stay away from his age and health. Of course they are valid concerns, but voicing them would seem petty and mean after all he has been through - torture at the hands of the VietCong, melanoma, etc.

Let's also not call him a whimp for not defending his wife and kid. Again, valid, but refutable, because the Repubs would just fire back about how he was a war hero. Of course, it's two different kinds of courage.

We are not the Swift Boat Veterans, we will not impugn McCain's war record.

But, oh, how delicious to paint him as a waffler...

They could even have a commercial, you know, two women talking

WOMAN 1: You know, John McCain is running for President. I always did like him.
WOMAN 2: Yeah, but which John McCain?
WOMAN 1: What do you mean?
WOMAN 2: The John McCain who...

OR, make it sound like his positives are in question
(divulge that these are Christians talking)
WOMAN 1: And you know, John McCain spoke at Falwell's own Liberty University
WOMAN 2: I know, but he also called Falwell evil
WOMAN 1: Yeah, but he's pro-Life, just like us. He supported South Dakota's abortion ban.
WOMAN 2: You mean the one the voters overturned? But I thought McCain said he didn't think Roe vs Wade should be overturned...

nah, that second one would be just nasty and insulting to Christians, kind of like that why African Americans should vote Republican ad. We're just not that mean.
