Night before Iraq invasion, BEAUTIFUL MIND had her doubts...
At a black-tie dinner on the eve of invasion, Barbara Bush took aside a Washington friend, David Boren, a former Democratic senator who had been the chairman of the select committee on intelligence during Poppy’s presidency.

“You always told me the truth,” Barbara opened, drawing Boren aside for a private chat.

“Yes, ma’am,” Boren replied.

“Will you tell me the truth now?”

“Certainly.”

“Are we right to be worried about this Iraq thing?”

“Yes. I’m very worried.”

“Do you think it’s a mistake?”

“Yes, ma’am,” Boren replied. “I think it’s a huge mistake if we go in right now, this way.”

“Well, his father is certainly worried and is losing sleep over it. He’s up at night worried.”

“Why doesn’t he talk to him?”

“He doesn’t think he should unless he’s asked,” Barbara Bush said.

This time there was no Jeb to intervene to avert a father-son clash. And the father was too decent and too loyal to force one.

1. Even Bar and Poppy were against the war?
Gee, maybe it really is just * and Barney now. Of course, Barney probably pees in his master's shoes at night as a form of protest.

7. Question to those who've read Woodward's latest
Edited on Sat Nov-11-06 08:43 PM by marekjed
Much has been said about Woordward's supposed turnaround, after his previous two, roughly pro-Bush books. But maybe it's not a turnaround at all; maybe Woodward is just a court chronicler to the Bush family.

Because if you read the article, GHWB and his sidekick, the saudinista James Baker - come out now as great statesmen, two trusty elders riding in to rescue America and Iraq. Is this the impression the book gives, or am I only getting it from Andrew Sullivan?

8. "He doesn't think he should unless he's asked."
I guess I'm a more opinionated parent. I would certainly tell my son if I thought he were making a mistake that would cost thousands of lives.
