Crack US military team reviews terror strategy

12 Nov 2006

SENIOR military leaders have begun a broad review of strategy in Iraq and other crisis areas in the Bush administration's campaign against terrorism, say Pentagon officials.

General Peter Pace, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, has assembled some of the military's brightest and most innovative officers and told them to take a fresh look at Iraq, Afghanistan and other flashpoints.

The objective, said Pentagon officials, was to outline a range of options that General Pace might draw on in advising President Bush and Robert Gates, selected by Bush to become defence secretary, as the White House adjusts its strategy in Iraq. Ideas discussed include increasing the size of Iraqi security forces, along with the American effort to train and equip them, and adjusting the size of America's force in Iraq.

But Pentagon officials stressed that the review extended well beyond Iraq, and that some unorthodox ideas on how to fight terrorism were being weighed in recognition of the fact that military efforts need to be part of an overall approach that includes all aspects of American power, including diplomatic and economic. Pentagon officials said the military review, which formally began on September 25, is being coordinated with the rest of the government, but that the military team had not met with members of the Iraq Study Group, the commission that is also looking into options for Iraq. The creation of that commission, headed by a former secretary of state, James Baker III, and Lee Hamilton, a former chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, had raised the possibility that fundamental decisions on how to proceed in Iraq might be determined largely outside of the Pentagon. The commission is being advised by former military officers, but none of its members have served as senior military commanders.

It seems George Bush thinks that he can continue to do whatever he wants and that now that he's brought Daddy's Iran Contra pals back, everything is going to be just fine.

Well, hold on. No, everything is not fine. First of all, Robert Gates hasn't even begun the confirmation process. It is not a done deal.

BTW: Who is this Iraq Study Group that has been meeting for months that no one knows much about? From the sounds of it, General Pace thinks he can get away with militarizing our response to every problem, not just Iraq. General Pace is Rummie's biggest fan. Pace needs to start looking for a new job because it's going to be time for him to retire soon.

It's time to say no to BushCo. Parties over. Please give back the keys to the car. The next two years are no going to be Poppy Bush's second term.
