New Yorkers, I Need Some Information... Please
Why are Democrats who run for office in NY also listed under IND & WOR parties??

Andrew Cuomo and Carolyn McCarthy both are and until I just checked out the NY Congressional website I didn't know this.

I just happened to watch the movie last night about Carolyn McCarthy who ran for office after her husband and son got shot by Colin Ferguson. I wanted to see if she was still in office or not, NY District 4 shows her name is still there, but I don't know if races have been updated or not. By my calculations, she would have been running again this time.

Anyone know about this???

1. It's like an endorsement
Edited on Sun Nov-12-06 01:18 PM by Nite Owl
Dems can run as dems but other parties (of which there are many in NY) who don't run their own candidate can endorse one of the major candidates running. The candidate has to get enough signatures by those in that party to be endorsed.
I'm sure McCarthy won, I'll see if I can find a link.

Here's the link:

District 4 Votes %
McCarthy 98,011 65%
Blessinger 53,277 35%

3. Thanks For The Information...
Good to see she's still there! What a story that was! I knew about it when it happened bu it was back in '96 and I wasn't sure if she was still there. I knew she had been a Repuke and changed parties because of the assault weapons law, but I didn't follow it after that.

Since I live in Florida, we have had our OWN set of problems for quite some time now, and it still goes on. But I was curious about the party affiliation.

Seems strange to me though.

4. She was a Repuke but had never
run for anything. A lot of NYers are registered as R but it dates back to when they were liberals and now they are really more Libertarian than conservative. That's why issues like 'gays can't marry' and doing away with choice just don't fly here. Even the R running against Spitzer said that civil unions were inevitable in NY and Spitzer is clearly and openly for gay marriage and no one blinks an eye at that. It was asked briefly at the debate but no one spent any time discussing it. The reason our candidate, Kirsten Gillibrand, was able to pull out a victory against the incumbent was because those registered here as Republicans saw that the party that they belonged to left them, they weren't like the national party, they want people to be left alone not be told what to do.

Florida? Good luck, you got your work cut out.
