Book-TV - This evening: Richard Dawkins on "The God Delusion"
Edited on Sun Nov-12-06 02:51 PM by longship
C-SPAN2 will be repeating yesterday's Book-TV program featuring Richard Dawkins about his latest book, "The God Delusion" at 7:00 PM EST.

I am reading this book and I consider it pretty damned good. Dawkins seems to always stir things up and I'm looking forward to seeing this program. As an atheist myself, I agree with many of his points of view.

I'm not posting this to start a theological flame war. I just thought that DUers who might be interested should be reminded. If you disagree with Dawkins, that's fine.

If you are interested in this, you might want to give this thread a kick.

2. I saw this last night - highly recommended
This guy is brilliant, with an incisive mind and a mordant wit. To add to the fun, this took place at Randolph-Macon Woman's College in Lynchburg, Va. This is, of course, less than 10 miles away from Jerry Falwell U. (also known as Liberty University). So when Q&A time arrived, several Liberty students asked questions they were sure would throw him off. Dawkins gave every one of them the smackdown, using airtight logic, rigorous evidence, and an off-the-cuff speaking style that sounds like a polished seventh draft. It was a remarkable performance, riveting, highly educational, and highly entertaining. I can't recommend this broadcast highly enough.

3. While I disagree with Dawkins on such theological issues...
His writings on science and evolutionary biology are airtight, well-researched, and enjoyable. I missed the program, but it would have been fun in a way to watch his smackdown of Liberty university students, who are probably young-earth creationists.

7. Fortunately not. Though perhaps, through a Tardis malfunction?

I thought it was kind of unfair that Matt and Trey singled-out Dr. Dawkins as the guy who taught scientists that they not only have to be right, but they also have to "be a dick about it."

Dr. Dawkins is a lot more diplomatic than James Randi or Sam Harris.

Neither of whom, as far as I know, have really hot wives.

But I guess they needed an actual scientist, and Dr. Michael Shermer has an even softer hand than Dawkins.

on edit: You know who is the BIGGEST dick?

Penn Jilette.

But again, he's not a scientist.

Oh, well.

I'm sure the South Park episode coinciding with the fall of Ted Haggard will work out well for Dr. Dawkins.

4. Thanks for the alert. There have been some pretty savvy people
speaking lately. Melvin Goodman and Robert Parry on Democracy Now talking about the Gates nomination. The two authors of the new book about Cheney (Lou DuBose and ?). All the people appearing on corporate networks are so boringly predictable. It's so great to listen to some intellectuals who make you think and know how to make a case for what they're saying rather than talk on orders from above.
