Reid seems, at first, an unlikely choice for party leader in the Senate, especially given the tradition of men like Lyndon Johnson, whose method of leadership was to cajole and threaten his colleagues. Reid doesn’t have the sort of domineering personality that L.B.J. had; in fact, despite an occasionally quick temper, he can seem almost shy. But, if Reid is no Johnson, he has, unlike his immediate predecessor, Tom Daschle, of South Dakota, or Frist, been able to keep his party largely united. That is due, in part, to his attentiveness; he is in constant contact with colleagues, and even reserves a pocket in his suit for their written requests. Susan McCue says that Reid is always assessing a person’s vulnerabilities in order to “disarm, to endear, to threaten, but most of all to instill fear.” And Reid has made it plain that there are consequences for stepping out of line. Without Reid’s approval, Senator Byron Dorgan, of North Dakota, who was making a bid to chair the Democratic National Committee, announced that he had Reid’s support. Reid—a friend of Dorgan’s—promptly and publicly withdrew his backing.

Like L.B.J. and other Southwestern politicians, such as Barry Goldwater, Reid has a habit of using language that his critics say is inappropriate for a Senate leader. “I think Senator Reid often says what we’re all thinking but perhaps are afraid to say,” Senator Edward Kennedy says. Reid has called Alan Greenspan, the Federal Reserve chairman, a “political hack,” said that Clarence Thomas was an “embarrassment,” and labelled Bush a “loser” and a “liar.” He surprised the Democratic operative Jim Johnson, who was conducting John Kerry’s search for a running mate, by sharply criticizing a long list of potential candidates, including John Edwards.

26. * is already asleep.
I love that "hand on the shoulder while speaking to someone else" gesture, though. That says, "I'm in charge." Gotta say one thing for Harry...the guy knows how to get a message across, and he's no wimp.

3. After 6 years I find it ever more blasphemous
that Bush is allowed to enter that room---the Oval Office. He brings much shame upon everyone in this nation, and belittles centuries of citizenship and sacrifice here.

10. For some reason I have a lot of confidence in Harry
maybe it's the way he carries himself or maybe its the way he expresses himself I don't know but I do. He to me is a fighter who will stand toe to toe but thats not where he is his most dangerous, he's dangerous in how he sizes them up and take a body blow here and there to get in a good shot later. And the best part about Harry Reid is He is not thinking of running for the Presidency.

19. I agree 100%
You know everything he is doing he's doing out of love for his country. I'm not saying anybody else is of course but there's just something about Reid and I agree. I trust him. Even back when all the shit was going on in the minority party and it seemed hopeless he pulled through as leader except for the filibuster thing which didn't have a snowball's chance anyways and that isn't his fault. I wish more Democrats would take his approach.

13. OK.... I have just gained enormous respect for Harry:
Like L.B.J. and other Southwestern politicians, such as Barry Goldwater, Reid has a habit of using language that his critics say is inappropriate for a Senate leader.

I like a man who speaks his mind - and I also agree with his assessment of the short list of running mates, if they were similar to what the media was reporting. Most of them SHOULD have been criticized.

21. Yep!
I knew Reid could handle these guys when I found out about him and the mafia and LaToya Jackson's husband. I didn't know that however about the "Casino" movie. I'm going to rent that now and I'm not generally into those type of movies but perhaps it will help me go into Reid's life more. I've noticed the people who aren't afraid to stand up have dealt in some way with the mafia: Reid and Kerry. Don't forget also that while Reid was doing all that they had to duck tape their house for protection. He's pretty awesome and I'm glad he's on our side!

16. I love those pics!
Senator Reid looks like he's ready to get in the ring! I'm glad he's staying the majority leader. He proved himself worthy. While there are of course at least two/three votes I disagree with him on in the past he's other wise did well with what he had. Now I'm anxious to see how he does with the power.

is that Reid alienated Cheney like he did to them. It seems to me that he's trying to keep Bush a lone so he can snatch him.

24. The hand on the shoulder is classic primate dominance.
Reid's a natural. He's all the right kind of ambitious---he's ambitious for the country to do well and he thinks he can do it better than anyone else. All the best pols in our history have had that quality, from Jefferson to FDR to Clinton. Despite what the article said about him, I've always read him as a sort of quieter, nicer version of LBJ as majority leader.

I think Bush has really met his match in the two grandparents we've got running the Congress this January.

29. Right after the Harriet Meirs debacle...
...I read somewhere that Harry Reid was the one who persuaded Bush to nominate her, knowing full well it would cause a revolt in the evangelical camp. I don't know if that's true, or how he had the ear of Chimpy to begin with, but if so then it's a brilliant stategery of manipulation!
