Kristol: send 50,000 more soldiers to Baghdad to save Bush's legacy
Bush must call for reinforcements in Iraq

By Robert Kagan and William Kristol

Published: November 12 2006

President George W. Bush has just over two years left in office. The central question facing him is: what kind of Iraq will he bequeath to his successor? Will it be a metastasising mess dumped on the doorstep of the next president, or an Iraq on the path to stability and success? The answer will determine how this president should be remembered by future generations.

....................

There is a popular theory that the prospect of US withdrawal will force Iraqis to reach an accommodation with one another. This would be more plausible had it not been disproved by three years of painful experience. Instead of looking for a face-saving way to lose in Iraq, President Bush could finally demand of his top advisers a strategy to succeed: provide the US force levels necessary to achieve even minimal political objectives. This could begin by increasing US troops in Iraq by at least 50,000 in order to clear and hold Baghdad without shifting troops from other parts of Iraq. These operations could then be expanded into areas of insurgency. This strategy would not stabilise the country right away but could secure Iraq’s vital centre and provide real hope for progress.

1. The soldiers over there should all see this article
I wonder how they would feel to know that their lives are on the linr so that prince Pissypants won't "look so bad" for history :puke:

3. 50,000 more troops would not be enough.
Either send in 300,000 more or get out.

13. Why, so we can slaughter the whole country that doesn't want us there?
No thanks.

5. You'd need an occupational army of 1,000,000 to glue the country together now.
Edited on Sun Nov-12-06 06:19 PM by Selatius
With the current number of soldiers, all they're reduced to doing is occupying a village or town, driving out the guerrilla fighters, and when there are no more fighters, they pull up and move to the next area and try to leave it to Iraqi guardsmen. Then the guerrilla fighters come back in, and the guardsmen either join them or disappear.

No such numbers of troops exist, and a draft is not what America wants. Americans did not live through Viêtnam just so they could watch their children or grandchildren die for a war they feel is a mistake.

7. How these guys continue to get media "face time" boggles my mind...
How WRONG do these guys (and I include Pat Buchanan and Bill Bennett) have to get before the media stops giving them on the air time.

*I* WANT TO SEE MIKE MALLOY!

15. They weren't wrong.
To the corporate media, and the defense contractors, they have been 100% correct. The war has made them fantastically rich.

8. The idea that 50,000 troops are enough to win now, is as stupid
as the idea was to invade Iraq with the manpower they used at the time of the invasion. If the US had gone in with 300,000 troops from the get-go, they might have secured Iraq, but the oily cat is out of the bag now and a 50,000 troop band-aid is not going to help the sucking chest wound called Iraq!

One more man dying, because of George Bush, for whatever reason, makes me sick to my stomach! Kristol should be deported to Iraq along with his entire family!

11. Sounds like little Billy Kristol is worried about his own legacy.
Doesn't want to be remembered as a neocon scumbag, so he wants to send more troops into the meat grinder.

What a swell guy.

It's hard to believe that there are any troops that support these clowns.

18. I think Kristol has been snorting and cavorting with brother Teddy!
Kristol is worried about the Holy Land, the Holy War and Bush's good name! Kristol supports the troops getting killed and crippled by the thousands, for the only "Noble Cause" Bush has ever had... Bush!

17. A majority of the American public
just rejected the advice & machinations of PNAC and the Neocon traitors. Kristol needs to shut the fuck up or immediately sign up for active duty himself and ship out for Iraq tomorrow --- and no cushy "GreenZone" duty --- right on the front lines for Billy Boy. Your days are OVER! It's already too late and Bush's administration will be damned by future historians for the utter disaster it is/was --- and not just for the Iraq War --- but everything --- including trying to destroy our Constitution and Bill of Rights. These bastards are so damn high and mighty about sending OTHER people's kids to be slaughtered in Iraq. No more!

19. Bush will call for a draft and dump it on the Dem Congress.
That way the Rethug freepers and neocons will blame it on the Dems, when Congress says "NO". Bush doesn't care about fixing Iraq, he only cares about who will get blamed for it.

20. Kristol to McCain: I'll see your 20,000 and raise you 30,000 more

Will McCain respond with an "all in"?

Such bets might have worked before the "flop", however most expert players would have raised far more with such weak hands. On the river card, it's just too late to bluff. Even a raise to 400,000 wouldn't work now. As Kenny Rogers sings... "you got to know when hold'em, know when to fold'em; know when to walk away, know when to run... you never count your money while you're sittin at the table..."

It's time for us to walk away...

and the war profiteers can count all of our money.

22. Man, you've got that right
Too bad McCain and Kristol don't remember we sent 550,000 troops to VietNam. Troops levels aren't the problem. The problem is Iraq did not attack us and thus we cannot destroy it, defeat it and rebuild it. We waltzed in pretending to be liberators after blowing their crap up, then created chaos.

They hate us,and for good reason. They will never tolerate an American presence there.
