Today’s New York Daily News reveals the White House gave then-EPA Administrator Christine Todd Whitman the power to bury embarrassing documents by classifying them “secret” after the Sept. 11 attacks.

“I hereby designate the Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency to classify information originally as ‘Secret,’” states the executive order, which was signed by President Bush on May 6, 2002.


Joel Kupferman of the New York Environmental Law and Justice Project told the Daily News:

I think the rationale behind this was to not let people know what they were potentially exposed to. They’re using the secrecy thing to cover up their malfeasance and past deceptions.

Immediately after the attacks, Whitman assured the public the site was safe, according to Democracy Now. A little more than a year ago, President George W. Bush vetoed a bill that included $90 million to monitor the health of rescue and cleanup workers who were at ground zero.

In 2003, it was revealed that just days after the Sept. 11 tragedy, the Bush White House pressured the EPA to tone down reports about the potential health hazards resulting from the buildings’ collapse.

I think environmental abuse and neglect and deliberate lies are a big reason for impeachment. Think of all those heroic people who went down there to help after 9-11. And they are suffering because they wanted to help their city and country.

These are two reasons why it would be right to be in favor of impeachment, even if there really wasn't any chance that it could happen. More, the Tuesday elections were evidence that it CAN happen.

4. This is news to me. This is discouraging news to say the least

for the long term health of those exposed. Does the EPA burying the info mean
those exposed will not get the required asbestos exposure follow up?

Does this mean that among others, Whitman knew of the exposures
and kept silent?

There is a lot here that borders on or perhaps just plain is
despicable, immoral and criminal.

I think now I know for whom those Homeland Security 'holding areas'
are being built. This admin is choc a block with illegals.

24. It is absolutely appalling that this crime has gone uninvestigated. The WH is

guilty of negligent homicide. The people of NYC were victimized once by 9/11 and then right afterwards by their own government.

There are also lots of reports online about incidences of childhood asthma increasing in lower Manhattan, and even pets that lived by the WTC died of diseases very possibly related. And yes, the rescue dogs have died too!

on behalf of New York. Many people who worked at the Trade Center site in the aftermath of 9/11 are suffering respiratory illnesses, and some of them have died. I remember very well all the reports that the area was "safe" for residents and rescue workers. It never seemed possible to me that that could be true.
