Ain't alcohol great?
Driver charged with killing mom, 2 kids

DENVER, Colorado (AP) -- A driver who is accused of being drunk when he allegedly plowed through a red light and killed a mother and her two children was charged Sunday in a Denver courtroom.

Magistrate Beth Faragher held Lawrence Trujillo, who allegedly left the scene of the incident, on $250,000 bail.

She also ordered him to stay away from the slain woman's husband who was also hit.

Frank Bingham, 41, is in fair condition at Denver Health Medical Center suffering bruises and nerve damage to his right arm.

Police say Trujillo was speeding in a pickup truck through downtown Denver when he killed Becca Bingham, 39, and her two children, 4-year-old Macie and 2-year-old Garrison.

The Binghams were out for a family evening Friday. Macie was wearing a ballerina princess outfit, and Garrison, dressed in a Superman cape, was being pushed in a double stroller, The Denver Post reported.

They were crossing lawfully at an intersection, which had a traffic signal, authorities said.

Police are unsure how fast Trujillo was speeding, but a witness had told the Rocky Mountain News it appeared to be going about 50 mph.

19. And all the bars and restaurants will... ?
Their taxes support, among other things, the cops to enforce DUI laws.

I would love for there to be less drunken driving, but the solution is transit, not zero-tolerance.

5. Alcohol? It was the car that ran those people down, not the alcohol
Edited on Sun Nov-12-06 09:16 PM by longship
We need to ban automobiles and stop this carnage!!!
:sarcasm:

Please. We've had our little experiment with prohibition. Can we agree right now that it was a bad idea?

7. tragic, but
it would make more sense to say "ain't stupid people great"

Add alcohol and driving to the long list of stupid things people do while driving - talking on cell phones, looking for another cd to plug in, flicking their cigarette ashes, turning around to yell at the kids in the back seat.........you get the idea.

It's not the alcohol - it's the idiotic people.

9. You have a point...
But alcohol makes people transiently idiotic even if they are not already.

10. If pot were legal, I wonder...
Maybe so many would quit going to bars and getting drunk. There could be Munch Clubs instead.

15. Alcohol really isn't the villain here...
Edited on Sun Nov-12-06 10:23 PM by dubykc
There is the factor of stupidity, whether it's of an inherent nature or liquid nature is irrelevant. But we also have our wonderful society to blame here, if our societal pressure didn't apply the illusion that drinking is glamourous and holds a huge amount of machismo, perhaps less people would succumb to the liquid induced stupidity.

17. I'm neutral regarding alcohol ...
I'm very against driving under the influence of any substance that impairs one's ability to drive.

As an aside, on Friday I noted a fellow driver applying mascara as drove on the freeway during the AM rush hour ... she was no less dangerous than some other jack ass driving under the influence ...

18. It's not the alcohol.
It's that a moron decided to drive after drinking too many. And as another poster said, Prohibition didn't exactly work all that well.
