What is the difference between a "moderate" (D) and a "moderate" (R)?
Lincoln Chafee is a "moderate" (R), so is Olympia Snow. Joe Lieberman, Tom Vilsack and Evan Bayh are "moderate" (D)s.

I can't see all that much difference between them, save that Chaffee is more "liberal" than the rest.

1. One would think there wouldn't be much difference
Except of course party loyalty (such as it exists - Joe Lieberman clearly has no real party loyalty). A Democratic Moderate is more comfortable standing with a Russ Fiengold than a Rick Santorum - and vice versa for a Republican Moderate. That's pretty significant, all things considered.

But on the issues, they are likely to be pretty well lined up.

2. I'd consider Ron Paul a moderate R
Since the crazy wingdings have commandeered the GOP, those who have more libertarian leanings (respecting church/state separation, right to choose, etc.) seem further to the center.

4. imo this group all voted for illegal war, letting bush illegally wiretap,
no oversight, retroactive immunity from torture and war crimes and allowed extremist justices to the scotus, and to refuse habeus and imprison people on bush's word.

none of them are moderate, someone moved the pointer far to the right.

5. I don't see much difference either.
Our moderate Dems today would have been Republicans back in the sixties. Back then Democrats were champions of the working class and unions and Republicans were pro-business.

8. All Democrats voted for minimum wage increase,
I don't think any Repubs did. Maybe Chafee?

One big difference between moderate Rs and Ds: moderate Ds just helped us get our majorites, and all the additional power on committees.

13. It's like the difference between partly cloudy and mostly sunny
Partly cloudy is more clouds than sun. Mostly sunny is more sun than clouds.

So a moderate Repub is more Repub than Dem, while a moderate Dem is more Dem than Repub...

Or something like that.

15. A moderate Democrat is a re:puke: in a Democratic leaning district.
In general, those calling themselves moderate are supporters of the corporate oligarchy, the old "what's good for GM is good for America" crowd.

Of course it is very good for them, and they could give two shits about us, except insofar as some of us are necessary to the continued existence of the corporation.

16. The difference is easy
Harry Reed instead of Bill Frist as Majority Leader
Sen. Leahy instead of Jeff Sessions or Arlen Spectre as chair judicial committee

Need I say more?

17. DLCers try to hide behind the label of "moderate" D
They're not moderates. In reality, they're neocon enabling wolves in sheep's clothing.
