An LTTE in local SC paper "Election Disaster" and my reply (kinda long)
Edited on Mon Nov-13-06 02:05 PM by Skip Intro
This was in The Post and Courier, Charleston, SC, yesterday. I read this this morning, and had to fire off a reply. Wonder if they'll print mine? Anway, this is kinda long, but thought I'd post it just the same...

LTTE in yesterday's paper:

--------------
A total disaster for America is unfolding right in front of us.

It seems to me that people made a very big mistake at the polls Tuesday. This party coming in January 2007 is the party of defeat, anti-military, political correctness and of complete losers.

We will pay a huge deadly price after what voters have done. Obviously the wrong people voted Tuesday, and it is a deep shame.

We are just waiting for a major terrorist attack to happen in some major city in the next few years if the terrorists get stronger again.

They are laughing in our faces right now. This election was a horrible disaster and a complete and disgusting failure for America. This is a huge defeat for America that will cost us dearly.

There is no future for this country as long as people want to remain ignorant about the deadly enemy we are facing. It doesn't look good for anyone.

It wasn't me. I voted conservative.

Liberalism is a failure and always will be a failure. I wish our troops the best in continuing their efforts to fight this global war on terrorism and for the spread of freedom around the world.

Let God be with them and God bless America, the greatest country in the world.
--------------

My reply:

--------------
I would like to reply to the letter to the editor from Kenneth Lund, entitled “Election Disaster,” printed in the Nov. 12 edition of the paper. As Mr. Lund was quite blunt in his estimation of the horrors set to befall this nation in the wake of the Democratic sweep of Congress in the recent elections, I will be blunt as well.

Mr. Lund called the Democratic party the party of “defeat;” said that the Democrats were “anti-military” and “complete losers.” He also said that, “the wrong people voted,” and that that was a “deep shame.”

This is insulting and disrespectful in the extreme, and, frankly, un-American. Democrats, as all Americans, want nothing less than ultimate security for our nation and our interests. We have husbands and wives, fathers and mothers, children and grandchildren, and to suggest that we would seek to undermine the security of this nation that we all call home is beyond the pale.

Further, I would like to know just what he means by, “the wrong people.” Is this the kind of democracy Mr. Lund and the Bush right want to export to the rest of the world? Mr. Lund appears to have bought Karl Rove’s slimy political tactic of divisiveness - American against American - hook, line and sinker. “The wrong people” - really?

This election was in part a rejection of the failure of the Bush administration to bring those responsible for 9/11 to justice. It was in part a rejection of the shameful handling of the Katrina disaster. It was in part a rejection of the attempt by the right to force their way into private family matters, re: the Terri Schiavo charade. It was in part a rejection of tax cuts for the wealthy while the working poor struggle to care for their families on $6.25 an hour. It was in part a rejection of record deficits. It was in part a rejection of lobbyists and special interests writing policy. It was in part a rejection of the corruption scandals of Tom Delay, and the perversions of Rep. Foley. It was in part a rejection of the attempt to open pristine and protected lands to oil drilling. It was in part a rejection of the idea that to be safe at home, we must surrender our rights to privacy and due process, among others. It was, in part, a rejection of the manipulation of the populace through fear, and the perpetration of that atmosphere. It was in part a rejection of the arrogance toward the people by those who are supposed to be our servants. It was in part a rejection of the lack of oversight, checks and balances, and accountability.

But more than this, it was a rejection of the quagmire that is the Iraq invasion/occupation. This nation was lied to and manipulated into a war of choice by those Mr. Lund appears to hold as champions of virtue. In the run-up to the war, we were told Iraq had bought materials to build nuclear weapons, which was not true. We were told Iraq did indeed have reconstituted nukes, which was not true. We were told Iraq had links to Al Qaeda, and it was insinuated Iraq had something to do with 9/11, this was not true. We were told Iraq had wmds, and that we knew where they were, this was not true. We were told Iraq was an imminent threat to this nation, this was not true. The sellers of this war used imagery of mushroom clouds over American cities to scare up support. We were told we’d be greeted as liberators, and that the conflict would be over in six months. We were told the mission was accomplished. Not true.

This administration took its eye off the ball on the real war on terror, and expended much needed resources, and the good will of the world, to fight a war of choice that did not need to be fought.

This election, about many things, was indeed a loud call from the people to those in power that, three years later with thousands and thousands of our men and women in uniform dead and still dying, and hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians suffering the same fate, that enough is enough. This election was in great part, a rejection of Bush’s falsehoods, manipulations, and his “stay the course” policy where Iraq is concerned.

No, Mr. Lund, “the wrong people” didn’t vote earlier this month. The People voted. People who believe in freedom and fairness. People who know America can do better. Its time to set aside the blind hatred, and work together to realize that better reality.

Awesome...you did it without dividing our nation....you should be pleased. If Lund's own letter didn't expose him as a narrow-minded, and hateful drone then your letter surely did, even if that was not your intent.

17. A small grammar point
In the first line of the sixth paragraph, you should insert the word "to" after the word "lied"

Otherwise, it's a great letter.

edit to add:

I just reread the original LTTE. Notice how he says, "I voted conservative." I have to wonder, do y'all have a "Conservative Party" down there in SC? Up here we have Democrats and Republicans. No "Conservative Party". I wonder why this guy didn't mention the Republican Party even once. NOT ONCE. Anyone have an idea? Is being a "Republican" the new "librrrul"? HAHAHAHA!

Thanks you. I'm tired of the RW'ers in this area thinking liberals are anti-military. I think we care more about those young people in the service then the civilians who work in the war making companies that plague this area. I got the paper yesterday, coupon day, but I try not to read the editorial section because Post and Courier only prints lightweight noisy letters. I hope yours get printed, and let me know if it does.

31. Something like 90% of the Iraq war vets running for Congress were Democrats, and
something like 2/3 of the veterans already in Congress are Democrats.

FDR and Truman led us through WWII.

The original letter writer should think before he parrots Limbaugh and Rove's bullshit.

Exceptional. You hit all the key points concisely and, more importantly, used a well-reasoned response using some very key points that can't be disputed.

You never crossed the line between criticism and name-calling, something the writer of the former letter did repeatedly.

I'm impressed.

39. "the wrong people voted"
His statement that "the wrong people voted" is evidence for something I've been thinking lately. I've been coming to the conclusion that when Republicans engage in things like vote suppression they feel morally justified - they actually do believe that they are doing the right thing! It's a scary thought but hard to escape. We need to catch and prosecute anyone who is trying to keep "the wrong people" from voting. The only way to stop it is to make sure that people know they can go to prison.

44. I almost skipped this post. I'm glad I didn't. Incredibly astute rebuttal.
This morning I had a friend tell me that a friend of hers had called her after the election and said, "Those sons of bitches won the election!!"

I'm sending this to her, and she can send it to him. Not that he'll listen. Anyone who refers to elected Democrats, chosen overwhelmingly by the voters as "sons of bitches," isn't going to be swayed. But at least he'll know what we think of the way he thinks.

I say "chosen overwhelmingly" because the popular vote favored the Democrats to a significant degree.

:patriot:
