Pentagon is refusing to release Rumsfeld's resignation letter
LINK

Ruff reaffirmed that Rumsfeld plans to remain at the Pentagon until his successor is confirmed by the Senate. Bush last week announced that he is nominating former
CIA director Robert M. Gates to replace Rumsfeld, but no confirmation hearing date has been announced. Ruff said it could happen as early as the week of Dec. 4.

The Pentagon has refused to release the letter of resignation that Rumsfeld submitted to Bush.

3. Bush is still trying to finish reading it. He gets confused on big words
Like "nincompoop" and "inculpate," and he's not at all sure he liked the tone of what he did understand.

4. It's a government document.
It's too bad we have to resort to the FOIA to view it.

5. Maybe the letter confirm suspicions that it was a sudden decision
and not one that had been in the works for some time as Bush has suggested. My guess would be that the letter doesn't add up to what Bush said during his announcement.

7. maybe
...it's because it's dated in the past (ie- long before the election)...

i've heard rumors that rummy had tried many times to resign but wasn't allowed to by Bush. take it with a grain of salt.

9. They love the secrets. I think it is a sure sign of power-illness. If even
the resignation letter is private.. they surely don't want to be known. Or known known. Hell - they use language to hide information during press conferences.

I'm not holding my breath for the book.

11. it's a personnel matter - that is usually confidential in MOST businesses
including the government.

there may be no legal grounds for releasing the letter without rumsfeld's permission.

same protection you might enjoy where you work.

16. That's a stretch
I'm pretty sure that correspondence between the Secretary of Defense and the President is considerered to be on a different level than a mere 'personnel issue'.

Besides as the other poster points out, Rumsfeld gave his permission:

Ruff said Rumsfeld did not mind if the White House released it. At the White House, spokesman Gordon Johndroe said there was no plan to release it.
