'Borat' punched in street attack
Borat spanked by angry Yank
By EMILY SMITH
US Editor
November 13, 2006

BORAT star Sacha Baron Cohen was beaten up by a passer-by after he tried to play a prank as his alter ego. He approached the man and said: “I like your clothings. Are nice! Please may I buying? I want have sex with it.”

But the bystander didn’t see the joke. He took one look at Cohen and punched him in the face. The funnyman — known for his Borat catchphrase “Jagshemash!” — yelled for help but was slugged again and again.

He was rescued by actor pal Hugh Laurie who had been on his way to a New York bar with Cohen. Laurie rushed to help and pushed the man away as Cohen struggled to his feet. A pal of Cohen said: “Sacha couldn’t resist playing the fool as Borat, but picked on the wrong person.

“I guess this guy thought he was being attacked by someone unstable and lashed out. Sacha is very lucky he didn’t get a much worse beating.”...

1. He's lucky he didn't get a much worse beating???
Since when is it OK to hit someone for saying something stupid?

3. Never. But since when is it unusual?
I can run into a bar and call the biggest man there a lot of names. He would be wrong for hitting me, but I'd be an idiot for doing it.

11. Dunno...
But if trends hold, I guess we will find out shortly when legions of mall rat imitators, armed with cheap accents and booze, start refer to other guy's girlfriends as 'prostitutes'.

I'll be willing to enter into 'dialogue', but ONLY after the third or fourth punch.

17. Actually, several states have 'fighting words' statutes.
They are legally considered equivelent to throwing a punch.

18. Laurie may look wimpy on TV, but he's actually fairly big
He rowed in the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race, so he can't be that small, and was at least athletic when a student.

5. I saw the movie this weekend and it is clear - NY'ers wont put up
with his crap. They show a few encounters in the movie while he is in NYC.

Considering what he says to strangers, I'm surprised he hasn't got his ass kicked earlier.

:)

16. lol- same here. I think he's hilarious, but
a big part of his humor is that you wonder just how much the person he's dealing with will put up with. This isn't surprising.

6. I'm surprised no one has beaten him up before.
I get the joke but a lot of people wouldn't. If a stranger comes up acting like that and saying inappropriate things you can expect that some people's reaction would be to slug the guy. I would consider this to be an occupational hazard.

I can't wait to see the movie. I haven't had a chance to see it yet but hopefully it'll be on DVD soon.
