5. I'm pretty sure that's non-native English there.
Translated into English, I'd render that:

"Where is your "free speech" now? Where is your "freedom of expression" now? Now that you have pressured ABC into changing its 9/11 series so as not to offend Mr. Clinton's delicate ears, I find your hypocrisy shameful.

Moreover, I believe you are unfair to Mr. Bush. It is not appropriate to blame him for Hurricane Katrina, nor is it appropriate to attack him for protecting American citizens from terrorists. It may be an unpopular decision for him to defend us so aggressively, but after all, Mr. Clinton based his decisions on polls, and this weak form of leadership was incapable of confronting terrorism in any meaningful fashion. Mr. Bush's tendency to do unpopular things that he believes are in America's best interest makes him a superior president."

23. I was a neocon until the invade-Iraq faction won out.
I thought Iraq was absolutely the wrong idea. I thought terrorism in general was just a distraction from the US-China long-term power struggle, and I didn't think the invasion of Iraq would end well. I was actually a green neocon, if that makes sense--I wanted to raise the gas tax, switch our cars to ethanol, and our power plants to nuclear. I thought that we should concentrate on developing Africa, the Pacific, and Central Asia, and use them to control their resource flow, eventually boxing in China. I thought the Mideast was just a deathtrap, and thought it was best to let the Chinese and Russians play around with it until it collapsed when oil peaked. And I was irritated when everyone thought, "Oh, Iraq will just love the f*ck out of us."

I thought, no, this will turn into Israel/Palestine, and we'll be f*cking stuck there forever. Better to concentrate on destabilizing China by encouraging dangerously rapid economic development, wedging American culture in, and pushing from the inside for a collapse. Better to concentrate on our long-term strategic rivals than on a brief distraction caused by a few insignificant terrorists. Afghanistan was okay, but only insofar is it gave us a great foothold on Central Asia, and a base from which to pressure Iran and Pakistan. Iraq, though, was stupid.

Then, as Iraq predictably fell into chaos and my intellectual heroes kept falling over themselves defending a terrible idea, I realized that they were nothing more than children drawing "and then we go here and here and here" arrows on a map. I also realized, by looking at the world reaction, that unilateralism wouldn't be accepted quite as easily as we thought. So I gave up on the whole idea.

I was always a Democrat, though. Just in the aggressive-foreign-policy, social-liberal, tax-the-rich Kennedy model. You know, that golden boy who made nuclear brinksmanship a hobby ;)

27. Question about China
Do you really want the collapse of China?
We have become dependent upon them for our consumer goods (the rapid economic development?) now.
Wouldn't destabalizing China result is major problems for the US?

I really think we have already been outfoxed by China. I don't believe there is anyone in our government tracking the items we are completely dependent upon China for in this country. Imagine if they said they would no longer ship lightbulbs.

28. Well, the theory was,
Edited on Mon Nov-13-06 09:28 PM by Kelly Rupert
you can just knock down governments and prop 'em back up again like nothin'. Like, what would happen with China was roughly:
1. Rapid expansion causes upper class to form, causing jealousy among lower class.
2. Chinese have built too many buildings before they're sold and invested too many millions on credit.
-the above have happened so far-
3. Chinese economy slows, immediately collapses.
4. Chinese peasants get laid off, and angry.
5. Mass rebellion. CPC loses "mandate of heaven," however you wanna call it. The Chinese populace has a long history of knocking off governments when things go sour, and right now protests are at astronomical level (55k demonstrations per year, actually). Isn't too hard to think that with a bit of that ol' CIA magic, things topple over.
6. US intervenes to preserve stability, prevent nukes from getting loose, etc. We can't have a civil war in China, can we?
7. We help the Chinese write up a new Constitution. Say hello to a new, free, democratic, free-market, friendly China!

Note: your results may vary.

32. I see what you are saying
Thanks for explaining what you meant.

I do believe that China will be the next world power. They have planned very strategically to link their economy to ours - and we are the dependent ones by virtue of their holdings in our treasury bonds and consumer goods. We may have the upper hand in weapons but how smart would it be for us to bomb what are essentially manufacturing sites (many located in and around Beijing)that keep us going? My guess is their takeover will be nuke-free.

When it was discovered recently that China has been trying to disable our satellites with lasers, there was not a peep from this administration.

Example: I recall watching a news story before the Iraq war. The techs were testing their electrical equipment before deploying, using a state of the art meter - that is now made in China.

But - who knows?!?

35. Oh, no doubt. China's doing well for itself.
If you want to get really scared, look at who they're talking to. They're making contingencies for a trade war. They've got long-term deals locked up with a few Central Asian nations (I think they got one with Kazakhstan when I was in Beijing last summer), they've made real inroads with Indonesia--they're looking to keep shipping lanes open and energy supplies constant.

We're looking to weaponize space, as are the Chinese. I'd give us the advantage there. Of course, if we all lose our satellites, that's a net gain for China in the unlikely event of a war between Taiwan and China. No worries there; we'll have an insurmountable conventional advantage for two decades minimum.

Any war we fight with China will be unconventional, and probably really "interesting." I'm looking forward to electronic/information warfare, unconventional use of conventional arms, and trade/market manipulation. Two superpowers fighting in the age of information, air power, and capital? The possibilities of creative resource denial are endless.

19. It crossed my mind that it may be Lazlo Toth
aka Father Guido Sarducci, aka Don Novello. As Toth, Novello wrote many phony nutjob letters to politicians, celebrities and corporations which he compiled - along with replies - in several very funny books. But even at his most disjointed he was not as weird as Paulo.

One of my favorite Tothisms, in a letter to McDonalds: "I see where you're up to 10 Billion hamburgers sold. How many more do you have to go?"
