Man charged in threatening letters case

LOS ANGELES — A man was charged Monday with mailing more than a dozen threatening letters containing white powder to U.S. Rep. Nancy Pelosi, Jon Stewart and other high-profile figures.

Chad Conrad Castagana, 39, appeared in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles to face a two-count complaint of sending threats and sending hoaxes by mail, but he did not enter a plea.

The letters, bearing fake return addresses, were sent in recent months to Pelosi, a California Democrat who is in line to become speaker of the House; comedians Stewart and David Letterman; Democratic Sen. Charles Schumer of New York; MSNBC host Keith Olbermann; and Viacom Inc. chairman Sumner Redstone.

The FBI said federal agents watched Castagana walk from his home to a public mailbox Thursday and deposit several letters. One was allegedly addressed to someone previously targeted and contained the white powder.

FBI agent Mary Hogan said in the affidavit that Castagana "described himself as a compulsive voter who votes Republican, and he said that he sent the letters to specific individuals because he did not like their liberal politics." Castagana said he put powder in the letters "to make sure the recipients would take his letters seriously," Hogan said.

4. Ask your doctor if Apathia is right for you...
... talk to your doctor about any urge to vote lasting more than 4 hours, ie. Ohioism, sometimes called Floridism.

18. It looks like Chad may have been building WMDs in his mommy's basement
<snip>

A Joint Terrorism Task Force that included investigators from the U.S. Postal Service and FBI agents from New York and Los Angeles traced the letters containing the white powder to Castagana, according to the FBI.

A search warrant of Castagana's Woodland Hills home revealed "possible chemicals that could be used to make weapons of mass destruction or literature that shows how to make it."

<snip>

"Suffice to say, he was presenting a clear danger by sending threats," said Laura Eimiller, spokeswoman for the FBI's Los Angeles office. "Initial testing did not find the powder to be a biological threat."

On an old van parked in the driveway of Castagana's hillside home, the phrase "Death to all liberals" is inscribed on the van's dirty back window.

Castagana lived in a beige, multistory hillside home on Baza Avenue with his 78-year-old mother, Geneve, reportedly suffers from diabetes and rarely ventures out.

25. wonder why they couldn't trace the leahy/daschle letters?
seems odd that this man could be so quickly found, yet the 2001 letters origin remain a public mystery, especially when the origin of the anthrax was known...

19. Two questions
One: How come they make it sound like this guy is just MAYBE a LITTLE QUIRKY, but aren't we ALL? Instead crazy as a Shithouse RAT?

TWO: WHY no mention of FreeperLandia in any of these reports? WHO the hell is deciding that where he hangs on the WEB isn't of any interest to the rest of us?

Okay, THREE questions..

THREE: WHY no Electrodes? No DOGS barking in his face on a short leash? No STRESS Positions? No Waterboarding? Why don't they mention that he's been brainwashed by Freepers?

WHY does it sounds like he's just another Compulsive CONSUMER, who got his wires crossed a little and decided to VOTE Republican, instead of BUYING SHIT?

If some Liberal was cooking up goodies (WMD) in their basement you could be goddam sure that they'd be mentioning ALL those Liberal websites that Blew his mind and GAVE him the instructions for making Anthrax out of BORAX. (Notice how subtly they have the same FEEL, they end in X, which is EVIL of course :) )

Okay FOUR then.

FOUR: WHEN are they going to take away everything we have UNDER OUR SINKS NOW? Every housewife in America has WMD under their sink or IN their Broom closet.. what bullshit, I'm calling them on that one.

23. I'm not sure exactly from reading the affadavit for the search warrant,
but it sounds like the case was cracked something like this: He bought some prepaid mailers and a money order from his local post office. The prepaid mailers are basically "cancelled" when purchased, and from the barcode on it they tracked it back to the post office where it was sold, and knew when it was sold. Even though he'd payed cash, the post office clerks remembered him, he was a regular and lived within walking distance of the post office in question.

Republican gets Oklahoma City airport bomb suspect out of jail

Believe it or not, you can find interesting stuff on Blog Explosion. Like the following bit of extreme stupidity.

Former Oklahoma City mayor Kirk Humphreys, a Republican, helped Charles Alfred Dreyling, 24, get out of jail last week after he was arrested carrying a pipe bomb into Will Rogers World Airport.

Dreyling told authorities that he had made the device and said it was “basically a pipe bomb,” according to an affidavit. Dreyling said he built the device for entertainment value, never intending to hurt anyone, and forgot that it was in his carryon bag when he brought it to the airport, the affidavit said.

Dreyling said he learned as a teenager how to build homemade explosives from Web sites like “The Anarchist’s Cook Book.” Dreyling said he has built and detonated several explosive devices for recreational purposes, according to the affidavit. — Airport Business

Humphreys testified at Dreyling’s court hearing.

“I know Charlie Dreyling quite well,” Humphreys said. “I’ve known him since he was in the first grade. I appreciate what the authorities are doing making our airlines safe.

“I have every confidence that they’ll find out Charlie Dreyling is a fine young man and no terrorist.

“He had a little explosive device, and boys like to see things go bang. He took it down to an outing at the lake, left it in his bag, forgot it and went to the airport.”

Based in part on Humphreys’ testimony, Dreyling was released to the custody of his mother on $10,000 bail. If convicted, Dreyling faces up to 10 years in prison and up to a $250,000 fine.

I’ll let you make up your own mind. Is this guy a terrorist or just a pyromaniac? And does it matter if his good friend, a prominent local Republican, helped him get out of jail? As for me, I’m staying away from Oklahoma for the foreseeable future.

Charles Alfred Dreyling, Jr. is a free man, and attending flight school to this day, as far as I know.
