AP: Prosecutors Deny Padilla Torture Claims
Prosecutors Deny Padilla Torture Claims
Prosecutors deny claims by terror suspect that he was tortured
during his 3 1/2 years in custody

MIAMI, Nov. 14, 2006
By CURT ANDERSON Associated Press Writer
(AP) Federal prosecutors on Monday denied claims by suspected al-Qaida
operative Jose Padilla that he was tortured during his 3 1/2 years in
military custody as an enemy combatant.

In papers filed in federal court, prosecutors said Padilla provided no
evidence to back up his claims and urged that the case against him not
be dismissed based on his allegations. They insisted that Padilla was
treated humanely while in a Navy brig in South Carolina.

"Padilla's conditions of confinement were humane and designed to ensure
his safety and security," the government said in its filing. "His basic needs
were met in a conscientious manner."

That included halal food, some outdoor exercise and medical attention when
necessary. Prosecutors said Padilla never made any abuse claims while in
military custody.

2. "Padilla never made any abuse claims while in military custody" - golly, that proves
he is a liar now?

"while in military custody" job one is to survive. Wonder who records what he said or wrote while in custody, and who decides if that comunication was making an abuse claim, and who defines what is abuse - guess it shouldn't be the judge after hearing testimony on the issue from those that were there in the room with Padilla during the 3.5 years.
