4. my gut tells me
there's a struggle going on in the background between who will be the puppet master - Poppy bush or cheney.

couple of little things have stuck out in my mind -

according to Woodward's book - state of denial - it was cheney's decision to bring in rumsfeld as Sec of Def., and I imagine cheney wasn't too happy with rummy's departure. News blather have indicated that poppy wasn't pleased with rummy in the first place, and "rumors" have pointed to poppy as being the one insisting on rummy's resignation

the other indication is how cheney just sat in the meeting with bush and peolosi, like he was just a piece of furniture... I wouldn't expect cheney to take over the meeting, but it's been strangely quiet from the bunker on any follow-up impressions about the meeting..
