Former President Bush Blames ‘Bloggers’ for ‘Ugly’ Political Climate
Former President Bush Blames ‘Bloggers’ for ‘Ugly’ Political Climate

Last night on Fox News, former President George H.W. Bush said the current political climate has “gotten so adversarial that it’s ugly.” Asked to offer an explanation for why there is this “incivility,” Bush pinned the blame on bloggers. “It’s probably a little worse now given electronic media and the bloggers and all these kinds of things,” he said.

VIDEO: http://thinkprogress.org/2006/11/14/hwbloggers/

Also, Bush revealed that he enjoys using “the email” but lamented that his son, President George W. Bush, cannot for fear that the emails would get subpoenaed. Bush worried that presidents who used email would be forced to prove “that you were telling the truth and all this stuff.”

Does the email work better on a particular internet?

152. George Herbert Hoover Bush left his fighter plane crew to die.
Instead of landing his plane in the water, George Herbert Hoover Bush ejected from his plane during World War II and left his crew to drown in the plane that got hit.

Experts say that if Bush had stayed in the plane and maneuvered it to hit the water on a more straight angle he would have saved himself and his crew. But no, not for the elite privileged Bush family.

John F. Kennedy proved a real hero during World War II. His Pt boat got destroyed but he helped his men get to safety.

Something about Republicans and their mean selfish actions that do not bode well for others.

203. Agreed... Could GHWB be even dumber than is dumbass son?
Everytime I'm in the States during the past 15 years and turn to any AM station it seems like there's a right wing wack job (usually a ex-con or dope addict) spewing nothing but hate towards the "evil, traiterous" LIBERALS...
BTW - I don't think there were any "bloggers" in the early, mid or even late '90's..

The currents of cronyism run deep, and people who otherwise seem like good people, accept alot of crookedness because they think that someday they too will profit from their connections. I see it in my neighborhood everyday, but I'm willing to accept that my neighborhood is more crooked than most.

133. I'm reminded of the so-called "fiscal conservatives"
to me they are just greedy bastards who want to pay less taxes but expect all cases of child abuse to be thoroughly investigated and expect the police to show up at their doorstep promptly at any hour of the day if called for help. The kind of people who balk at "welfare moms" but give a pass to 4 billion dollars a month for a useless war. YES. I think many conservatives are willing to overlook absolute corruption in the delusion of "more money in my pocket".

usa is spending money it does not have on bombing people who did nothing to us - we have wasted more money time and lives for this useless war while creating more enemies who have watched usa citizens torture, kill, and maim their love ones while putting on a kangaroo court trial for the man these conservatives funded and gave WMDs - I scream at the TV and throw my hands up over the damage they have done to the world - how anyone voted for a republican this election is beyond my comprehension - And yet this is suppose to be a christian nation - but they do not follow christ teachings in anything

my thoughts exactly, I have always known that it was bad, but since the republicons and bushco have come into power the world the world really seems as though it is a different place. I can't understand why some in the other countries hate america. They don't really hate america though, they hate what a large amount of americans are now beginning to see these are the most hateful, lying, greedy, evil, meanest, selfish people I have ever seen. No matter how much they have and they want more and they don't want others to have any, I go to bed each night shaking my head and praying for their demise... These people are unbelievable and they think that everyone is beneath them...

John Q. Public (read: Kos, DU, el al.) being able to express his dissenting opinion in public. To them, it's dangerous for the populace to be allowed to express itself, especially if that expression is in opposition to their master plan.

187. just shows how influencial the internet has become in politics
dirty or not. Blogs and the internet as a whole have become a new factor in politics.

Prior to the internet, the only "news" people were able to get was limited to newspapers (mostly local), TV or the radio. And most of these stories were not original reporting as they relied on other news outlets, basically regurgitating the same story.

With blogs or the internet in general - people are able to access and read articles from a "brazillion" different sources and follow up with discussions/commentary.

This increases interest and participation in the poltical arena by THE PEOPLE - in a democracy - this is good when people are informed and understand the issues.

14. "Bloggers" = citizens
Those who hold secrets at the same time they hold public office fear nothing more than the citizens they serve demanding access to their own government.

It's not the bloggers responsible for the "ugly" climate, Mr. H. W. Bush. It's the lack of accountability that has activists riled up. As former head of the CIA, you know that. It's called blowback.

27. Oh golly, fight fair!
Don't you Democrats know that you're supposed to just take your daily beating from the likes of Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Bill O'Reilly? Sure, you're allowed to come out with a book describing their inaccuracies a couple of years after the fact, for all the good that that will do. But the daily instant analysis and talking points are the sole province of such guardians of civil discourse as Michelle Malkin, Anne Coulter and Pat Buchanan.

Boy, if there's one thing Republicans hate, it's anything like a level playing field.

And why would George H.W. think that his son's emails wouldn't be protected by claims of executive privilege or unreasonable search and seizure? Oh yeah, it's because for the last 15 years the little gremlins of his party have been busy snooping into every corner of Democrats' lives, and turnabout is most certainly not fair play as far as Bush Sr's overprivileged ass is concerned. He can and must know everything about your personal business, but his is decidedly off limits, and his son made sure of that with his first executive order.

28. Poppy Bush always blames anyone who disagrees with him for 'division.'
This is what first struck me as his fundamental corruption - smearing the "nay-sayers" like Spiro Agnew did. Poppy repeatedly embraced his 'base' as the "real Americans" and smeared anyone who disagreed as trouble-makers.

Until his demon spawn, nobody was as divisive, mean-spirited, and ugly as Poppy since Joe McCarthy. Poppy and Babs are the least "civil" pair in the White House ever ... until Junior and Pickles.

29. OMG, he's even further out of it than he was in 1992
1. He says W can't use email because it would get subpoenaed. Hello? What, letters on paper can get subpoenaed too. What he really mean to say it is too difficult to SHRED emails when they get subpoenaed.

2. "the email"? (sorry, snarky but I couldn't resist.)

3. And what in the hell did he mean by "presidents who use email will be forced to prove 'that you were telling the truth and all this stuff.'"
Are we destined to be ruled by republicans who are suffering from Alzheimers? What on earth is he talking about? HE IS INSANE!

So anything he says about bloggers is clearly as delusional as the rest of it. Someone obviously told him "its the bloggers" fault and that makes sense to him.

What? Bloggers are not...people? With opinions? Who have the right to voice their opinions? If you can sort through what is on "the Internets" and figure out what to believe and what to discard, you might end up sending powder to Jon Stewart.

I thought before I saw this that Poppy was better than W but who knows?

121. That was my first thought
Here's a guy that didn't know you could scan groceries worried about "electronic media and the bloggers and all these kinds of things..." Is he lamenting that news is reported almost instaneously these days? Is he pissed that we know and can catalogue statements that politicans and other make (in applicable formats: video, audio and print) and pass this knowledge on through blogs and e-mails? LOL. He's probably still mad that many those Foley chats surfaced or maybe he's upset that those Foley-related denials by the GOP were all over the place or maybe he's still pissed that we've got Babs' comments about Katrina victims being better off all over the internets.

But hey, look at it from his perspective, he does have an idiot son that he has to make B&W statements to, so the dim son will be able to understand him. He knows he can't tell the kid, "Yeah, go ahead and sign up for Fox News alerts" because the kid, I mean the pResident, might start signing up for other things or he might start forwarding FNC alerts to Karl with notes like, "Hey Karl, you're right, the American public is buying this crap." Or worse, el pretzeldente might start sending IMs to Condi or JimmyJeff that are similiar to the ones that took Foley down.

Alot of GD is anti-Republican and Freeper-bashing instead of Pro-Democrat, and anything pro-Kerry or pro-Dean, gets alot of flaming arrows tossed at it, or gets ignored and unresponded to as we rush to toss another clever insult into the "Rush Limbaugh is a big fat idiot" thread of the day.

Then again, my LTTEs are usually the same way, more anti-Republican than pro-Democrat, because I may not know how to solve problems, but I do know that their 'plan' isn't going to do it, and in fact, is not even intended to do it, but is just meant to throw perks at their base.

It would be nice if we could have a top-ten list that praised Democrats and Democratic legislation.

Why Bloggers, why now...?

By SoCalDem

Hey Media....

You have fallen down on the job. You know it, and now you know that WE know you know it.

You flew too close to the sun, the wax melted, and ....there appears to be a parachute "malfunction"..Happy Landings, Icarus

........

For decades media had Carte Blanche to report on whatever they chose, and for the most part did it fairly well. I'm sure that when FDR was putting together the New Deal, there was a lot of media attention to the pros and cons of the programs he planned. I know that during the Kennedy/ Johnson/Nixon/Ford/ Carter/Reagan/Bush1/Clinton years, there was no shortage of critical press. They understood that it was their JOB to report on important legislation.

Presidents are not supposed to "like" the coverage they get. It is what it is. Administrations have always tried to divert attention from their failings and trumpet their successes, but it's the DUTY of the press to call equal attention to both.

The stakes are very high, and the public is starting to realize that this might be our "last stand" against a government run amok. Instead of having the press standing by as "the fly on the wall" recording what is happening, they have become little more than megaphones for the politik-speak coming from the White House.

The real irony here is that as things have gotten ever more serious, the press has turned tail and run the other direction. They insist on force feeding us celebrity drivel, as China "eats our lunch". We just have to study, in depth, the make up of the Jackson jury while jobs are leaking from our country like water through a sieve. Brad & Jen's break-up is "top of the hour news...every hour" while we rarely hear an up to date accounting of our war dead. Our lopsided practically militant legislature is dismantling our long held safety nets but we see smiling anchors bemused by the antics of water skiing squirrels, and skydiving Grandpas.

Instead of deliberate reporting and follow-up on important issues of our day, we are "treated" to pseudo-journo-spokes-folks who delight in telling us about THEIR lives and the books THEY have written. Whole "networks" are devoted to "news", and yet they seem to interview each other as often as they report the news.

That brings up a whole other point. Experts? Experts used to be just that. They did not serve up a political agenda with their science. The so-called experts who are foisted in our faces day in and out are little more than Think Tank Hacks who have sold out to the right wing machine. They are as believable as the tobacco executives who repeated one after another "I do not believe that nicotine is addictive". For a price, these experts will say whatever they are paid to say. We know it, and we are tired of the lack of diversity of thought.

Bloggers are just ordinary people who are tired of being lied to, and who are ashamed and embarrassed for our "media folks". For the most part, the on-air "talent" are people who had the advantage of a good education, are well paid, and should know better. It's like seeing the guy from school who got a PHD, working at Walmart.

We also "get it". We recognize the "code words" used in reporting the few news stories that get reported. We are ashamed of you because you are letting us down daily, hourly. You are our last hope for spreading truth and unvarnished facts, and yet you are usually first in line with lies, half truths and White House fax transcriptions.

Before you accuse the LEFT of being poor sports, I might remind you that "the left" controls NOTHING, and hasn't for a long time, so the "liberal bias" crap just does not pass the "smells like shit" test. Truth HAS no bias.

Our so-called media jumped on the war wagon with breathtaking gusto, never questioning the obviously bogus information, and yet had the guts to "be offended" when ordinary people started to take you all to task.

You are our "last man"..

We count on YOU to tell us what's going on. Sure, you all looked "cute" in your "war outfits", and it probably was great fun to race through the desert on tanks. You grabbed every lifeline the government tossed you as the reasons for war proved as solid as blobs of mercury. WE knew from Day One, minus 5 that the whole war was phony, and we are holding you responsible for a great part of the resulting carnage.

There was a window of opportunity when real reporting could have prevented the whole thing, and exposed the mess. We saw how you all enjoyed watching Colin Powell doing linguistic gymnastics at the UN, while the whole world laughed at us. Our media stuck their fingers in their ears and chanted la-la-la-la. You could not be bothered with mere facts.. The swooshy graphics were all ready.. the logos designed, and the measurements for your "war costumes" were already at the tailors.

and now we have arrived somehow, at Gannon/Guckert/Jeff/James/Cannon/Bulldog/BoyWonder.. whatever-the-hell he calls himself today. Get a grip people.. It's NOT about the sex (although he flaunted it).. It's about the LYING... (Now where have we heard that canard?) and it's about the LACK OF SECURITY at the White House, and the EASY ACCESS that a male prostitute could get, and yet legitimate news people have difficulty getting.

We are spending billions of dollars on Homeland Security, and yet our own White House seems relatively INSECURE.

The Blogosphere is being covered now, out of obvious desperation on your part, but you are covering it in your usual dimwitted way. Turn the microscope around. You should be focused on:

Why can ordinary citizens with a computer be able to dig up facts that are "unknown" to people with degrees in journalism?

Why is the general public MORE aware of the undercurrents of stories than the mainstream press?

Why are bloggers meticulously careful in the sourcing of their material, providing voluminous links, while "real journalists" are the ones "just making stuff up" and claiming "confidentiality" when they get caught?

What's it TO you if real people have opinions too? Are OUR opinions less valid because we are the consumers of news, instead of the ones asking the "non-questions".?

Why are the relatively FEW opportunities afforded journalists WASTED with inane "questions"? I don't care what he eats, how fast he bikes, how many armadillos he fed Barney, or any of the other crap you guys ask him.

In case you have not noticed, we have some serious issues , and they deserve your full attention. If you cannot do it, please find someone else to do your job.

We have "moved on"..

to their liking via the mainstream media. Now that everyone has direct access and we can talk to each other and point out the inconsistencies, they don't have the kind of control over public opinion that they used to. And they haven't gotten that yet, so we see the spectacle of how they try to control the masses and their frustration that they no longer can.

I thought it was the revealed torture of prisoners by US citizens with the approval of leadership.

I thought it was the secret prisons and other outsourcing of torture.

I thought it was losing a whole American city and disregarding citizens dying from thirst and hunger while waiting for help to arrive which too often arrived too late.

I thought it was pretty ugly when the President was eating cake and fiddling a guitar while these citizens were drowning in their homes.

I thought waging a war of choice for reasons that turned out to be false and killing hundreds of thousands of people was pretty ugly.

I thought the political climate couldn't get uglier than when the president made jokes about the false reasons and laughed at the consqeuences.

I thought saying that Democrats were rooting for the terrorists was pretty ugly.

I thought calling the Geneva Conventions "quaint" was very unattractive.

I thought record Oil profits gauging consumers without controls or explanations super duper ugly.

I thought detaining people without due process is just plain old ugly.

I guess I was wrong. I guess it's only ugly to point these things out. I guess I'm just very unattractive.

118. What set me off more than anything was the attack on Clinton by the minions...
of Bush Jr. That really made me angry. A guy who had the love and respect of millions across the globe only to be replaced by a sub-moron after continuous unsubstantiated attacks on real estate dealings and then the Lewinsky affair, which was nobody's business except Bill, Hillary and Monica. They stated started the food fight.

If they want to get serious and start talking sense, I am all for it. But it seems the only way to get their attention is wallow in the mud with them. Bush and his gang of idiots should understand we are no longer putting up with their crap.

96. Everything appeared to be working without a problem when we had the fairness doctrine...
But then Pres. Ronnie decided to give a gift to the GOP and oblished the fairness doctrine, as one of his last acts as president.
The GOP dominates the radio media for the next 15 years, with the likes of Lumbutt, Hatenity, and O'lielly. Then upstart Fox shows up and RW TV is born. Everything was RIGHT in the world. All the hate they had against LIBERALS and such.

Then we start to fight back. We start using the internet as our means of communicating, raise money for Dean and everyone starts to take notice. Air America hits the airwaves and the truth to power gets broadcasted.

Bill, Rush, & Sean have no answer, and their ratings start to fall.

'06 elections come around, and the GOP gets smoked. Suddenly it's our fault?
Rush admits he's lying "I won't carry the water for them anymore..."
And it's the blogger's fault?

Bush 1 needs to stop smoking what Jr. is using.

97. Former President Bush Blames ‘First Amendment’ for ‘Ugly’ Political Climate
I'm sure Bush-41 would prefer if we all shut up and let him and his cronies run roughshod over our country. But that's not going to happen. People are out there finding and publishing the failures and felonies of the Republicans in general and the Bush Administration in specific, and the Internet is the medium for their message if the media won't cover it.

For starters tell us about the eight WWII era fascists you had to fire from your election campaign in 1988.

How you systematically went about murdering those who knew too much about the October Surprise (1980).

Politics has always been nasty.

I hold the Bush's - both of them - responsible for the below the belt demonizing of the opposition and the civil war going on in the Congress and this country.
The Bush's are not uniters.

If anything, bloggers bring sanity to arena...allowing the exchange of ideas, a search for the truth, and forums to vent frustration that would otherwise be taken out on husbands, wives, children and pets.

Does Poppy consider Lee Atwater and Karl Rove to be bloggers? If so, then his statement could be true.

Yes, but he's saying that the climate, as it is now, is due to the bloggers, not that they created it out of nothing. In some ways, the climate has always been there, so he is blaming the bloggers. But in any case, this is General Discussion, the forum for things like this, the pressing and the not so pressing.

there they are, willing and able to not just TELL the truth (and provide some darn fine analysis), but get it out to the millions poste haste. Ne'erdowells can't hide their bad deeds behind a stenographic or somnambulant press any more. We have thoroughly democratized "the press" and made it ours (or rather built one to supplant the one that wasn't working any more) -- only the MSM press doesn't quite realize it or that their fate goes the way of the dinasaur.

Yep, I think it's the bloggers' fault too.

then perhaps he would have put a stop to the comic book attacking Mike Dukakis during the 88 Republican Convention:

or the concept. I also found it amusing that he said he uses e-mail more these days. Most older "senior" letter writers will continue to use that medium, rather than clicking way on a keyboard. I say this because letter writing has a more personal touch that they usually want to convey. E-mails are not usually letters in their minds. This has been my experience with mentors or older colleagues in their 80's - 90's.

205. Newt Gingrich and the rigid right is when the uglyiness started.
Robert Michel and Tom Foley got along reasonably well. I think it has to do with the rigid rights agenda to destroy workers rights, and return America to the days of inequality before Civil Rights, worker protection, environmental regulation, rights to organize, and even the income tax. As some say, Repugs would like to return America to the days of William McKinley, when big business ran rough shot and everyone had to find for themselves. And everyone was broke but those who lived in the gilded cage.
And don't think it's just progressives vs regressives. Find an enemy of Grover Norquist's money machine and see how Repugs treat themselves when the attack a RHINO. ( Republican in Name Only)IT's vicious. They'd take us back to the days before Griswold vs COnnecticut. Better buy up those excess condoms before the religious right takes over.

Good that means he thinks we have power and he's trying to preempt it.

The political environment is ugly because through a free internet people can get the truth
out about the very ugly world the greed and amorality have created.

What isn't ugly about world that is choking itself on its own refuse and creating scenarios where
climate change may end even our ability to survive as a species?

What isn't ugly about a world where we can 't even hold elections in this country without the fear
that they'll be stolen or, at the least, that in any given district, thousands of votes will be tossed
or shredded or simply "disappeared" in to the worst software coded in this country?

What isn't ugly about a world where the world's greatest nation is taken to war based on lies that
are universally known by lawmakers; lies which are ignored as those very same lawmakers vote for the
enabling of war because their political careers would be compromised to not do so?

What isn't ugly about a world where Gulf War I veterans have to fight like crazy to get their obvious
disabilities recognized by a government that sent them to that war?

Yes, Mr. * I, it's an ugly environment and you helped create it.

I'm glad to know that the truth is getting out.

210. The ULTIMATE irony: The "owner" and patron of kkkarl rove blaming
ANYONE ELSE for the ugly political climate. George H.W. Bush* is the original employer and patron saint of the rethuglican dirty tricks gang, going back to Lee Atwater. When Bush* the older bemoans the lack of civility and the ugliness what he really means is that he's pissed someone else is either using his tactics or found some one way around them. He's the man that hired rove as his son's political babysitter.

209. Bloggers are not responsible for the hate in incivility in politics.
The blame appears to be people like Limbaugh & Hannity who spouts hate all day long. Look at ann coulter (doesn't deserve capitalization of her name) who said the 9/11 widows were enjoying their husband's deaths. Sure there may be some bloggers who are guilty of crossing the line along with some of us. However, what I can remember and trying to be unbiased it comes from the right wing and the religious nuts. I too would like to see the hate politics go away but blaming bloggers is heading off in the wrong direction. Everyone needs to look in the mirror first before they start placing blame on someone for something.

exposing lies is easy even with the short term memory of an average citizen.

And all this information about Iran-Contra, Drugs, Prescott Bush, Skull & Bones etc

Or a nice Washington Times? It was easy to buy all newspapers in Washington from the streets by secret service agents but with bloggs?
