The Republican Nominee for President in 2008 Will Be: Jeb Bush
The Republican nominee has to appeal to the social conservatives and to the big moneyed interests, and before last Tuesday, that was George Allen, but he imploded. That leaves Gingrich, Frist, and Romney as the only candidates that can appeal to both, but none of them have much national appeal.
As for Rice, McCain, Guiliani, and Pataki, none of them appeal to the social conservatives and the gun nuts.

So, when you sort it all out, the only Republican that can appeal to the base and appease the big money crowd is Jeb Bush. I cannot think of another Republican that can do this.

Your comments are welcome.

21. Agreed
I think Romney will not overcome that obstacle. The fundamentalist religions dislike Mormons...greatly.

7. Bring him on.
The country will never elect another BFEE member to any national office.

There are just not enough stupid Americans for that to happen.

9. Nix Romney
I've heard from a couple of different sources that Romney's chances among the theocratic conservatives are slim to none. Many Evangelicals and Southern Baptists regard the Church of Latter Day Saints as a cult or teachers of "false doctrine." The Southern Baptist has a portion of its website devoted to teaching its members about cults and sects. See here for more detail:

http://www.sbc.net/redirect.asp?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Enamb%2Enet%2Fsite%2Fpp%2Easp%3Fc%3D9qKILUOzEpH%26b%3D238383&key=cult&title=Patterns+in+the+Cults+%2D+NAMB%2Enet&ndx=SBC%2C+IMB%2C+NAMB%2C+ANNUITY%2C+LIFEWAY%2C+WMU%2C+ERLC%2C+SEMINARIES

The republicons are going to have a real problem uniting behind a single candidate. The candidates palatable to the fundie types are not going to get an automatic pass from the other electoral constituencies. Bush's "compassionate conservatism" BS was blown away in Katrina's winds. The non-values voters are going to want to see a track record of competent governing.

no real reason, just a hunch. (but then, I also thought that OUR nominee would be Mark Warner, and that didn't pan out)

11. The Bush name
is now the most toxic name in politics. No way is it Jeb in 2008. I think Guiliani has a very good chance if he doesn't get destroyed by personal stuff. And it isn't only fundies and big money that vote in repub primaries.

14. Jeb would have to change his name.
Outside of the hardcore, W-could-eat-a-toddler-in-the-Rose-Garden-and-it-would-be-excusable fundie base, no one would support a Bush for Prez in '08.

On the other hand, in 2000 I said no AWOL frat boy business failure with a history of drug and alcohol abuse could ever become President either, so what do I know.

Eliminating him at the last minute would be the best way to bollix up the entire GOP.

19. NO! Wouldn't Be Caught Dead In Florida
but GOP politicians and voters are creatures of habit. Their inertia, or lethargy, or lack of intellectual curiosity, call it what you may, is predictable.

That's why all the talk about Condi makes me laugh to tears. Only as a puppet for some cabal would she even stand a chance, and then only if she'd actually accomplished something this time around.

Well, the cabal is busy going further underground, Condi hasn't done squat, and the rest are either under investigation, or under indictment. It's a good day to be a Democrat!

I actually think Jeb realizes just how much the Americna people are fed up with his brother, and the Bush name in general. I don't think he'd even consider running!

20. all politics aside Jeb is a much better speaker than his brother
Forget politics for a second. Let's just compare the ability of Pres. Bush 43 to his brother Jeb Bush. Jeb is hands down a much better speaker. I don't agree some of the things he is saying, but he has a lot more charisma and he is better as far as how he looks on camera.

I think he will be smart and wait until 2012. McCain will probably win the nomination just like Bob Dole did. He kept trying and finally they said okay. I don't think McCain can beat Gore, Obama, Edwards, or Clark. John McCain is not a good speaker. This is a great time to get the White House back. Just understand that Jeb is probably waiting in the wings.

25. OR ... VP ...
I agree, he has to have a 30 point IQ advantage on his brother ... I also agree that he won't be electable as the first name a ticket this next go around ...

HOWEVER, I CAN see the powers to be making him the mandatory VP for whoever commits to it, for the presidential nominee ... Seeing as he is floping around like a pathetic tramp in a bar with everyone he knows he needs to appeal to get elected at this point, I see McCain agreeing to have Jeb as his VP to get the nod ...

22. I think voters are tired of guys named "Bush"
In every election from 1976-2004, there has been a Bush or a Dole.

I think the Bush fatigue will extend to his little brother - which is probably why Poppy is running Junior's administration now, in a last-ditch effort to save the family name and create a dynasty.

23. If they picked Jeb Bush, that would be too easy for us.
I think the public is getting really tired of having a Bush in the White House. Having Jeb as the Republican nominee would be easier for us than running unopposed.

24. I agree
Jeb would be an excellent candidate for them. He comes across as a rational moderate, yet he's a rabid rightie. I think of all the right-wing candidates, I'd worry most about him. He would tap into a powerful fundraising organization, has really smart contacts, and has been a pretty successful governor by objective measures. The biggest problem for him is that people will be so sick of his brother, they might not be ready to stomach another Bush.
