Jack Murtha Has The Votes (MY DD)
Breaking BlueE-Wire 2008

Jack Murtha has the votes
by Jerome Armstrong, Tue Nov 14, 2006 at 04:14:51 PM EST

I've heard from a couple of different Hill sources that Murtha is ahead; that newly elected Democrats favor Hoyer by a 2:1 margin, but that Murtha is ahead by about 25 votes overall, which has come about from the standing members after Nancy Pelosi's letter. The vote is Thursday. Let's hope that sticks and Murtha becomes the Majority Leader

1. I'm skeptical of anonymous sources with vote counts
Does anyone remember how everyone got all hyped up about blocking Alito's nomination. There were numerous blogs claiming that there were enough votes for a filibuster.

13. Lying is a bit harsh.
Let's say he is stating reality as he sees it where a nudge could put his guy over the top.

14. If he is saying some untrue which he knows to be untrue
it is a lie.

19. I wonder why he would actually have believed this
Hoyer had a large number of Congressmen publicly supporting him.

5. Interesting. I heard yesterday that Steny Hoyer had enough votes to win.
I guess we'll find out Thursday, eh?

11. He'll be leader
He'll be leader. Especially since he has the votes. I have not really heard anything else from Hoyer on the issue so him being quiet perhaps that means he doesn't have the votes. At least that is how I'm taking it.

12. Another 24 Hour News Cycle Story...
Leadership battles always seem to play out in the media more than in the cloakroom. Hoyer needed to get out first to generate some buzz to see if he had any real support and to force Pelosi's hand. This "test of leadership" really wasn't as it was well known Pelosi wanted Murtha and as the head of the House Democrats, her recommendation carries a lot of weight.

Next week this story will fade as other "battles" will come up. The chairmanship and committee seating wheeling and dealing have just begun and those will be other news stories that really aren't, but sure make for good chatter. Good chance Hoyer will get a nice Chairmanship and this battle will be long forgotten by January.

Pelosi knows she needs a strong leadership team to fight both the Repugnicans and special interests in her own party to get anything accomplished next year. She also knows to help the party in '08, the Democrats have to show leadership and responsibility in running the House...and to do this she must show accomplishments and ones that can be taken on the campaign trail in purple and red areas in '08.
