Poll question: Housekeeping question: How best to stop NEW threads on WORN OUT topics?
Edited on Tue Nov-14-06 08:51 PM by RiverStone
Dear Dem friends, I'm kinda a newbie here but have observed a silly and frustrating phenomenon over and over:

People that are sick and tired of worn out topics, whine about the continued discussion of worn out topics, which in turn becomes A WORN OUT TOPIC!!! a.k.a. the Lieberman threads.

So what to do to clean up this all this excess threading?

1. if you don't respond, it don't get kicked
if people are still responding, obviously, for them, the topic is not worn-out

hide the topic and let people who are still enjoying the discussion go on their way

problem solved

2. And the hide button is your friend
It's next to the alert button. Otherwise people are gonna post what people are gonna post.

6. That's the best option I find too.
Unless we go into a level 1 or above.

3. It's gonna happen...sometimes intentional...sometimes
Edited on Tue Nov-14-06 08:53 PM by Cerridwen
a poster doesn't see the duplicate topic elsewhere.

There's a little box with an 'x' in it next to the title of the thread...click that and it'll hide the thread so you don't have to wade through the dupes and such.

That's what works best for me when necessary.

edit to add: if you do post a thread requesting posters to quit posting about a "worn out" topic, expect 10-20 more threads on the topic.

4. Use the hide a thread button.
I have been using it liberally lately for a lot of different topics that just plain annoy me. It is much nicer than getting all upset or angry, just ignore it.

11. I've been here long enough to know you can't stop a topic
until it's run it's course. Use the hide function if it bothers you. Although, during the Terri Schiavo affair, many of us couldn't even keep up with the threads we wanted to hide, there were that many.

And hide thread buttons.

It's that simple.

I am not sure if you need a certain #of posts or be a donor to activate that option but if you don't like a subject manner, just don't click on the thread.

10. I go elsewhere. Deciding that I no longer perceive certain nuisances
is kind of handy.

Make them 0 for you. Tune them out.

12. I'm pulling out the old (well, OK, middle) timer's card here. It used to be a lot worse.
When a single event, such as a lone sentence spoken on a Sunday talk show, was observed by many of us, DU was swamped with OP subjects such as "Can you believe he said that!", "Turn on MTP now, you won't believe it!", "OMG, no way did he say that.", "WTF did he just say?" and various other non enlightening posts.

Now, at least, when someone posts on a media event, like K.O.'s commentaries, others will chime in with links to the first posted thread and gently chide against multiple posts.

Sometimes it works, sometimes not. But, I promise, there has been a general improvement in this area. :hi:

13. Just Don't Click On It. I've Always Kinda Viewed The "Stop These Threads!" Whiners As Equal To An
adult who keeps touching a hot stove and blurting out "God damn this fucking stove! I'm so sick of it burning me!" while repeatedly going back to touch it again. They then get even angrier and proceed to blame it on the person who turned on the stove. Now would you also blame the person who turned on the stove, or would you just tell the adult "Jesus Christ you jackass, stop touching the goddamn stove!" LOL

Don't click on the thread. It's as simple as that. :)

21. This stuff is endemic to internet boards and can never be fixed
Human nature will not allow it.

If there are a lot of posts on the topic, a lot of people are excited about it, and trying to shame them about it only ticks them off.

If one is not excited about at topic when many others are, one is simply out of the mainstream for that time.
