Things are an awful lot different now than they were when he was growing up. It wasn't until 1973 that being homosexual lost the automatic designation of mental illness. Try growing up being officially mentally ill, ostracized, alone, the only one. Go ahead. Try that for just one day. See how you like it.

I know he was self-loathing and voted against his own best interest and that of others, but the old adage of "walk a mile in another man's moccasins" applies.
