Vote for Your Top 3 Human Needs Priorities for the New Congress
Edited on Wed Nov-15-06 02:14 AM by Sapphire Blue
From the Coalition on Human Needs (http://www.chn.org)...

---------------- 10 Human Needs Priorities for the New Congress ---------------

Raise the minimum wage and index it to assure regular increases in future years.

Restore the $4.9 billion cut from child support enforcement, so that $8.4 billion in support owed to children does not go uncollected over a ten-year period.

Make the Refundable Child Tax Credit available to more low-income families.

Improve eligibility and benefits in the Food Stamp Program in its 2007 reauthorization.

Roll back recent tax cuts that predominantly benefit people with high incomes in order to address critical national priorities.

Make appropriations adequate to fund improvements in health, education, early childhood education and child care, community and social services, jobs programs, nutrition, housing, and other services to meet human needs.

Improve workplace conditions by establishing minimum standards for paid sick days.

Provide a comprehensive fix to our nation’s immigration laws that includes a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants living and working in the U.S.

Provide funds adequate to ensure that states can maintain and expand coverage under the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) and Medicaid.

Help low-income parents to find and keep jobs with above-poverty pay by giving states more flexibility to count education, training, and other activities that help parents overcome barriers to employment, including those arising from disabilities, within Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF).

About CHN

The Coalition on Human Needs (CHN) is an alliance of national organizations working together to promote public policies which address the needs of low-income and other vulnerable populations. The Coalition's members include civil rights, religious, labor and professional organizations and those concerned with the well being of children, women, the elderly and people with disabilities.

History of CHN

Founded in 1981 by organizations concerned about President Reagan's proposals to consolidate targeted federal funding for human needs programs into block grants, the Coalition has since expanded its work into other issue areas. The Coalition promotes adequate funding for human needs programs, progressive tax policies and other federal measures to address the needs of low-income and other vulnerable populations.

The Coalition serves as a clearinghouse of information on poverty and human needs issues for our members and the general public. CHN publishes a bi-monthly legislative newsletter, The Human Needs Report; legislative analyses, issue briefs, fact sheets, action alerts and other informational materials. We also sponsor educational seminars and briefings on issues of concern to the human needs community such as our annual Budget Briefing and a variety of issue specific briefings.

CHN convenes meetings, forums, and working groups of our member organizations to share information, forge consensus positions, and develop and implement collaborative strategies on public policy issues. A cornerstone of this activity is our CHN Advocates' Meetings held every other Friday while Congress is in session to discuss the latest legislative developments.

6. end the drugs war
It is the cheapest and easiest action with the most benefits for the poor and most vulnerable in society.

here is an example:

(the problem, undiscovered by bad journalism, the drugs laws are failing the people they are supposed to protect)

10. reverse the Military Commissions Act
that would restore habeus corpus, put us back in compliance with the Geneva Convention, and restore the War Crimes Act's power to punish those who violate these human rights laws

11. All Humans Need Impeachment ASAP
(Here's what I'll be "writing in")

People are being tortured in our names as we speak. We must defend ourselves and the world from this criminal regime.

Sadly, that reality has relegated this fine alliance to being the Coalition on Luxuries for Irresponsible Americans.

We must put away our wish lists and defend our once-great nation.

Impeachment IS our positive agenda.

It is our ONLY moral, patriotic option.
