I can visualize bush stepping down, even see it as a possibility.
I mean, stranger things have happened in America, and not all that long ago, I remember it well. They say impeachment is not on the table, but there are no happy days ahead for bush or cheney, they had some good times, raised some hell for sure, but now they are screwn.

Nixon was going to be impeached, he 'stepped down', or in reality he was given the choice between the two. Some suggest he did the honorable thing by stepping down, but really, it was that or impeachment.

bush ain't Nixon, Nixon had major brains, bush has no brains, and no desire to fight or be reviled and tortured by the rule of law, he might take the 'honorable' route as well. republicans are always harping about how repubs when caught in unethical positions they always do the honorable thing and step aside for the good of the nation bla bla bla.

Only time will tell, but I could see it happening with this wimp.

1. Bush sure as hell ain't honorable.
He would flee in the middle of the night to Paraguay if he decided to do something like that. Don't you think?

2. Not going to happen, but Cheney might...
How's this for a nightmare scenario:

Cheney resigns for "health reasons," and Bush -- in a spirit of "bipartisanship" -- picks Joe Lieberman to fill out Cheney's term. Lieberman becomes a front runner for the REPUBLICAN nomination in 2008 (knowing he's anathema to Democrats) and the Republican governor of Connecticut picks his replacement, robbing the Democrats of the Senate majority.

Let's enjoy being ahead without imagining what *might* happen for good or ill.

8. Here's my two cents - Cheney may go.
If he does it will be at the orders of Baker. Daddy's crew is in charge now and the don't like Dicky.
If he does I expect them replace him with McCain. That's assuming McCain doesn't comit suicide first.

27. On the contrary
The Southern fundie base LOVES Lieberman. It's in the blue states where he doesn't stand a chance of winning a presidential election.

3. Only if he got pressure he couldn't refuse
He has the ability to block the unpleasant truth from his narrow mind until circumstances overwhelm him.

He really likes being the big cheese, so we need someone to really sour his milk before he will end voluntarily the scene of many crimes which is what he has turned the White House into.

4. He did one smart thing, same like Nixon
Remember, Nixon's vice president was Spiro Agnew. Remember him? I won a $5 wager on him -- the joke was that he was Nixon's insurance. And arrangements had to be made for Spiro to step down first and -- since Dems controlled the house and the next succession would have been a Dem -- a Republican vice had to be installed before Nixon stepped down.

So, what about Cheyney if *bush steps down?

5. I do not see that. I feel we mis-read him. He is sure he is right.
It looked like he was going to the dentist the day after the election. I am willing to bet Karl told him he would win and he picked that to believe. I really think Bush does live in a bubble and believes what he wants and he seems to self feed it with this God business. He will not be the first to shut his eyes to how the world is going as he dreams his drams of glory or what ever he is dreaming about. I do not think he has ever had his feet on the ground but in some dream world or his own thoughts.

13. His undoing will be the fact that he won't "clean house"
Rumsfeld is only the first of the major imbeciles to leave office. Bush is such a poor manager, he can't see beyond his loyalty as to the failure of his staff. He won't dismiss them and my hope is that the new Congress will make him pay for it.

16. I think you're onto something.
What you're saying feels right to me. We are going to uncover lots more evidence about the shenanigans that went on. The Democrats will spare the country the impeachment spectacle by telling Bush he has no choice but to step down. The same has to go for Cheney or else we will be in even worse shape.

19. Nixon was also struggling with a mental breakdown...
but you're right, he had brains, so he was probably intelligent enough to know when it was time to step down. I don't have that kind of faith in the chimp-in-chief. I think Poppy will make a valiant effort to shephard him through the next two years, it remains to be seen if he'll be successful. At any rate, I think Cheney is gone by the time the new Congress takes it's oath.

20. I think the administration will fight.
They will tweak the edges to make their ideology seem to change a little, but I expect them just to keep going. It's up to the courts to make them look bad and turn them back on occasion from illegal activities that come before it.

21. Yes, but if Congress keeps Impeachment off the table...
they it's just the same sh*t different day isn't it? Just more Congressional infighting, corporate lobbying, deal making aka playing politics and more screwing of the public who are the ones paying-in more ways than one-for them to continue the B.S.

* will NEVER step down unless pushed into the same corner that Nixon was.

24. Ah, if wishing made it so.
I think Nixon knew he would not only be impeached, but convicted. If he had no fear of conviction, then impeachment would not be much of a threat. But impeachment is indictment and after indictment comes the trial, so resigning did an end run around it along with being pardoned by Ford.

Impeachment is off the table--now. Did Pelosi say that impeachment is off the table and would never be on the table? Hearings and investigations will put it back on the table. Anything worth having is worth waiting for.
