Delusional Write-In candidate lays out ambitious agenda for one-month term
Edited on Wed Nov-15-06 12:35 PM by FLDem5
When the dust settled on the election for disgraced former Congresscritter Tom Delay's seat, two issues were settled.

First, Shelley Sekula-Gibbs "was sworn in as a congresswoman on Monday night and already she's a lame duck. Because of a weird electoral quirk, her brief term in office expires next month."

But she is still "proud that the people of the 22nd Congressional District honored me with their votes." and feels she is "blessed by God. This really is a gift from God." and is "looking forward to rolling up my sleeves and getting as much done as I can accomplish."

In one month. Okay lady, what do you want to get done, exactly?

"I'm working hard to accomplish the things I'm working for," she said yesterday. "For tax cuts. For immigration reform. To make sure we have a good solution for the war in Iraq."

But wait, there is more!

How did she feel, asked a reporter from the Houston Chronicle, when Democrats came over to greet her?

"I welcome that," she said. "I welcome bipartisan support."

Amazing! In one short night in Congress, Sekula-Gibbs had already done most of the things that our elected representatives do. She'd held a news conference, she'd voted, she'd endorsed bipartisanship, and she'd pledged to "work with my colleagues." To experience the full gamut of congressional life, about all she needed now was a committee meeting and a breakfast meeting.

Good luck, lady. You are a fitting ending to the comedy that is the bugman.

4. DeLay's staff actually walked out on her
Roll Call supposedly had the story and Burnt Orange Report gives us some of the details

The woman who was sworn in this week as the interim Republican successor to ex-Rep. Tom DeLay (R-Texas) was, shall we say, not a hit with holdover DeLay aides.

In fact, they showed their feelings about their new boss Tuesday by walking out of the office en masse and resigning, effective immediately. The DeLay refugees, who included DeLay's personal chief of staff, David James, walked out of the office, Von Trapp family-style (though without the singing) and huddled at Starbucks to get their wits about them.

7. at least, if they had shown up, Bush and Cheney would've received a warm welcome
as opposed to the rest of the Congress running from his visits.

9. DeLay's replacement says staff deleted records and files
AAS article 11/16
DeLay's replacement says staff deleted records and files
Just three days after being sworn in, U.S. Rep. Shelley Sekula-Gibbs wants Congress to investigate the destruction of files in her office by former staff members of her predecessor, Tom DeLay.

The staffers walked out of her office Tuesday, resigning en masse, reportedly because they didn't like the way she was treating them.

Sekula-Gibbs said in a statement Thursday that seven employees in her Washington office and the district office in Stafford, Texas, outside Houston, "deleted records and files without my knowledge or permission" before quitting.

Spokeswoman Lisa Dimond told The Associated Press that the congresswoman had not yet gotten a response to her request for an investigation by the House's chief administrative officer.

Do you think Shelly should call Homeland Security and report DeLay's staff as terrorists? Hey, only Tom DeLay can abuse Homeland Security, he is the government after all.

10. It's not an "weird electoral quirk," exactly....
Edited on Thu Nov-16-06 07:41 PM by tbyg52
It was all quite deliberate, and quite expensive, as I understand it.

First the R's wanted to take DeLay off the ballot and put in a hand-picked (by the head honchos) candidate, in violation of the law. A lawsuit by the Dems took care of that (yay!).

Then they insisted on having an election for those few weeks, at a cost of about $2M, I hear, the main purpose being, it seems to me, to get Sekula-Gibbs's name on the ballot *somehow*. (You've heard about "Vote Twice for Shelley" sung to the tune of "Beer Barrel Polka," right....?!)

And I'd just like to state we're not *all* stark raving nuts here in District 22. (Just the R's. ;) )

Edited to add this link to "Vote Twice for Shelley," for those of you with a better Internet conntection than I've got:

11. Rick Perry can be blamed for that waste of money too
Our incompetent, taxpayer money wasting, Governor called that special election. I think we was just as delusional as Shelly thinking she would win the general election too. Nick Lampson didn't even bother to file in the special election race. He just took out little Shelly when the real race was on.

Of course you're not stark raving nuts in CD22. You had the good sense to elect Nick Lampson. :toast: Man that has got to really chafe Tom DeLay, don't ya think?
