Can we revisit this creepy picture?

That's one damn creepy picture.

To Man-on-dog's left, his young daughter. She looks to be about 10 or 11,
(25 if you look at her hands and decide) so why is she carrying a little doll?
Why is the doll dressed like her, ...or is she dressed like her doll?
And why are both wearing dresses designed at the OK Corrall?

And the poor wife, she knows she's getting beaten bad tonight.
The older daughter looks resigned to an attack of some kind.

Farther to the right is, I assume, Man-on-dog's only son. (Is he his?)
Please God, let that apple roll a mile from the sap tree.

I'll bet a DNA test would reveal his Dad was Gomez Addams.
Or maybe Tucker Carlson.
And how many times, total, has Junior seen the Harry Potter movies?

53. I know a lot of fundie families and feel sorry for their kids.
They are constantly being brainwashed, especially the ones who are home-schooled. Some of them are able to escape when they are 18 and begin to think for themselves. I just feel under no circumstances should we belittle children for the sins of the parents. Rush Limbaugh's 1993 comment calling Chelsea Clinton "the White House dog" hit me pretty hard.

I don't really feel sorry for the kids. Even the crying one was probably fine the next day, or as fine as you can be with parents like that. Kids don't usually brood on political losses like adults. That's why they're kids.

Politicians who use their "family" as props, and even force them to share the stage with him in his utter defeat, are just asking for it..

No sympathy for Ricky..

Any caring parent would have known how upset the kids would be, and would have spared them the indignity..

The photographer who sold the pic "could" have spared the family if he/she had not felt it newsworthy

96. Yes, every politician puts the sobbing youngest child right up front
next to dad's podium during a concession speech, and holds her in place without mercy.

And every person who miscarries or has a premature child die after birth takes home the corpse and gives it to that same, much younger child, to hold.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with any of this, or these children.

After the last 6 years, Im im in no mood for sympathy for these evil bastards. After Rick Santorum treating homosexuals as subhumans, he forfeited his right to not have his kids mocked.

They look like they just stepped off the Mayflower for God's sake...these people are supposed to be representative of the United States? Spare me.

The girl's a little too old for a doll too, Ricky. Or is that another fetus?

God these people are creepy. Good riddance.

6 years of fighting fascists does that to you. It's payback time as far as I am concerned. Pointing out that the guy's family is creepy and way outside of the mainstream is not abuse. I'm not the one trying to make laws restricting his kid's rights.

I've not seen it before.
It gives a whole new meaning to "Dysfunctional Family"
and the idea that a picture says more than a thousand words.

There isn't enough corporte payola in the man's
pocket to ever pay the family therapist's bill these
people will need.

Good lord, it is truly a horrifying image.
A tragedy, this family, really.

63. It isn't the doll,
or the way she was dressed, it was the breakdown. Weren't the kids prepared for the loss? Responsible parents would have kept the children informed about the status of the campaign and likely outcome. These kids could have done their crying in a much less public way a week earlier, but I'll bet they were "protected" from the real world news until it jumped them. This won't be the last time either.

74. Oh, Lord.
Again with the "you must not have children" argument. That's got to be the poorest argument in the history of the internets.

I myself have children, and the times I've laughed at them include:

when they got scared of Santa.

when they dropped the ice cream out of their cone.

when they let go of the balloon.

when the dog knocked them on their butt.

Now, do you have kids? Because I find it hard to believe you haven't laughed at the same sort of thing.

As for bullies, they're the type of people who tell other people what they should and shouldn't laugh at.

The parents are to blame here. Anyone can make the Santorum kids the butt of a joke now that the parents entered the children into the public sphere. Not our problem.

Oh and PS Beaverhausen: kids most times think it's frickin hilarious when you laugh because they dropped their ice cream cone. Kids pretty much only get fucked up by parents who get upset when the ice cream cone falls. If you can be calm and find humor in all of your and your kids adventures, you will be mostly safe and your kids will be mostly relaxed. Just sayin' ...

I have a 3 1/2 year old destroyer of worlds. Yesterday the pharmacy tech looked at her and said, "you are the cutest kid ever!" I said to him, thinking of when I had tried to give her a bath earlier in the day and she said, "No, today is not bath day. Can't we come to a compromise on this?", "You don't know the half of it." He gave me a blank stare. I then cursed his name, hoping he would have a complete genius child that everyone thought was "cute".

I hope to stay in the neighborhood long enough to see how this plays out.

168. Not all cries are real
My son, only 21 months old, has learned that he can cry as a way to manipulate people. Laughing at him and pointing out that I know when he's being a big faker is exactly the way I get him to stop (it's not cruel, as normally I can get him laughing, too).

Young Ms. Santorum there is much older. Yep, I am cynical, but I strongly suspect that she has been made to cry intentionally, i.e. "Yes, I'm sorry, but Daddy cannot go back to the Senate. And now think about all the babies that are going to die while daddy gives his speech."

90. However...
Edited on Wed Nov-15-06 08:41 PM by mentalsolstice
...do you laugh at your children when they're being bullied because of something they have no control over? Something that really hurts them to their core...or are your children very superficial, with only a surface layer?

I was bullied when I was growing up because I was "different", and it wasn't something I had any control over, whatsoever. Additionally, my best friend's parents were alcoholics, and at a very young age (6) I learned from her about how we all love certain people, even though they may be terribly misguided, because they're "our" people. If you laughed at Santorum's kids for any of the reasons stated in your reply, I would have no problem, those are the normal trials and tribulations of being a kid.

Additionally, if they were adults, and thus had some control over their fate, I would have no problem at laughing at them. I, myself, have laughed here about the * twinkies, but they're adults, they now have the ability to choose their own path.

I was offended when people made fun of Chelsea Clinton during her father's term, and I'll be fair, I'm offended when Santorum's kids are made fun of. Equal opportunity, as far as I'm concerned...

I'm just saying we need to let this drop. The OP mentioned "revisit". "Revisiting" how these small children are reacting or dress is just plain cruelty. I was bothered by the original posts, but I think "revisiting" a week later goes beyond the bounds if decency.

I'm starting to regret that I donated to this forum in the throes of an election high.

Edited for clarification

121. Wow?
That's all I can say. What hatred! Obviously, the liberal, tolerant, progressive party I belong to isn't the same one you belong to... see my post at #81.

I'm looking for a group of like minded folks to discuss getting out of Iraq, health care, fair wages, and the like. And, yes, to have a little fun at the conservatives' expense (and not of their minor children). Before you tell me to go away, maybe if you would title your threads better, I wouldn't have clicked on it in the first place. I would have avoided it as the kind of thing I'm not interested in, and frankly, I'm ashamed to find on this forum. I clicked on it hoping for a fun picture of Chimpy, et al.

And you know what, just because you've got kids and grandkids, doesn't impress me in the least...I know plenty of f*cked up folks out there because of their parents... I'm not saying that your kids are messed up...but I have a hard time fathoming a compassionate mother making fun of small children in the cruel way you have here. Just because you have kids, doesn't make you an expert on child development...

I realize that this discussion isn't going in this forum to reach Santorum's kids, however, if it's going on here, I can only imagine the cruelty they're experiencing out there...

the call prairie clothes. They are somewhat updated but still look nineteenth century. Even the expensive department stores in Salt Lake City, Utah had that style displayed in their windows the last time I was there, calico print midi length dresses with lots of ruffles. The HBO series "Big Love" costumes one of the wives and her and his female relatives in this style with the pony tail braids.

I can imagine a control freak bully like Santorum would like religious fundamentalism because it keeps women in what they think is their place.

On edit: Sorry I mean't Santorum not Allen.

throw some water in your face, and look deep into yourself.

there obviously is something putrid and completely fucked up going on there for you to lash out at me over a stupid picture accompanied by some thoughts that I, personally, find funny.

now YOU are the voice of DU?

Sorry, but I missed the election.

Quite obviously there are people on this thread who are not taking such extreme positions as yours.

I'm not going to take a page from your book and call you names.

I think I'll take the high road and say your comment(s) have been noted, wish you the best, and move on.

You know what they say about opinions, and everybody having one, right?

129. I am all for taking SAntorum out on the contradictions
of what he claims to be a christian on vs the constitution, but simply promoting an image of him that we do not know what is true is not only irresponsible, it is un-liberal. We do not need to inflate these idiots or make up things about them, what they are is reason enough to remove them from office. Anyone who promotes a fundamentalist religious viewpoint as what motivates them politically, well that is reason alone to remove them from office.

I don't want a fundamentalist Christian theocracy influencing my government, nor do I want any orthodoxy, be it Jewish or Muslim etc...

131. 'Oh the humanity, think of the children'
Edited on Wed Nov-15-06 09:19 PM by GoneOffShore
Why? Sanctomonious has obviously never thought of the children - not really.

Here's Dan Savage's take on this whole business:

"As for Santorum's kids, well, once again we're put in the position of having to feel sorry for the offspring of a delusional bigot. But just how bad should we feel? I remember listening to the radio when Santorum said something obnoxious about gay couples: An anti-gay-marriage amendment was a homeland-security measure, Santorum said, which makes gay couples terrorists. My son, who happens to be the same age as Santorum's younger daughter (the one weeping and clutching a doll in that widely circulated photo), was in the room at the time and he got pretty upset. So, yeah, we should all feel bad for Santorum's kids, but let's also feel bad for all the other kids that Santorum hurt."

More here - http://www.thestranger.com/seattle/SavageLove and here http://www.thestranger.com/savage/ricksantorum

"But, oh man, Republicans sure are pussies. Give them a taste of their own fucking medicine—when are Democrats going to start employing dirty-trick tactics on Election Day to suppress the Republican vote?—and listen to them whine. (How long until we hear the sad cries of the oppressed Republican minority in the House?) It was perfectly okay for Santorum—a politically powerful figure—to say the most vile, offensive, disgusting things about his fellow Americans (he was railing against oral and anal sodomy for anyone, gay or straight, in that infamous man-on-dog interview), but when politically powerless people come together to make Santorum the butt of, yes, a vile, offensive, disgusting, and effective joke, well, that’s just rude!"

So, there you have it. Someone has said it far better than I can.

Sorry kid, your dad's a dick head and you might want to change your last name - soon.

I figured it was time someone else weighed in on this.

And who better than Dan Savage.

BTW - I love your cat kids - we have two, Katie and Singha.
And as soon as I figure out how to post pics I'll share.

Added on edit:

And I just posted in another thread how Karen Santorum might be the power behind the throne for Ricky Rat. The local alt weekly did an article on him. The Path of the Righteous Man http://citypaper.net/articles/2005-09-29/cover.shtml

Check it out. Ricky Rat was, at one time, a "regular guy" - I know, that's a difficult concept to swallow, but apparently true. It was only after he met and married Karen Gerver that he became the enormous bigot that we all know and despise today.

143. This is the first time I have seen this photo. If I could interpret this
young lady, I think she is crying because of the hideous outfit her parents made her wear in front of millions to see, mortified to be forced to carry a baby doll twin, & very unhappy because her parents told her she should be unhappy. A very manipulated photo shoot with the kids as unwitting pawns.

I have a pretty sick and politically incorrect sense of humor (which has drawn vicious flames my way in the past), but I draw the line at kids.

I'm not being judgmental here, just my 2 cents (I have to admit, though, it is a rather disturbing looking family in the vein of the Adams Family hehe). :)

Santorum: We Found the WMD

June 21, 2006

Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA) took to the microphone today to announce a shocking discovery — that WMD have been found in Iraq:

Congressman Hoekstra and I are here today to say that we have found weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, chemical weapons. … Since 2003, coalition forces have recovered approximately 500 weapons munitions which contain degraded mustard or sarin nerve agent. Despite many efforts to locate and destroy Iraq’s pre-Gulf War chemical munitions, filled and unfilled pre-Gulf War chemical munitions are assessed to still exist.

The Bush administration commissioned the Iraq Survey Group to determine whether in fact any WMD existed in Iraq. After a year and half of meticulously combing through the country, here’s what the administration’s own inspectors reported:

While a small number of old, abandoned chemical munitions have been discovered, ISG judges that Iraq unilaterally destroyed its undeclared chemical weapons stockpile in 1991. There are no credible Indications that Baghdad resumed production of chemical munitions thereafter, a policy ISG attributes to Baghdad’s desire to see sanctions lifted, or rendered ineffectual, or its fear of force against it should WMD be discovered.

The White House should immediately announce whether it stands with Santorum or whether it stands behind the review conducted by Charles Duelfer and the Iraq Survey Group. Recall, in October 2004, Bush said of Duelfer’s analysis:

The chief weapons inspector, Charles Duelfer, has now issued a comprehensive report that confirms the earlier conclusion of David Kay that Iraq did not have the weapons that our intelligence believed were there.

Fox News isn’t waiting for an administration statement. Their right wing pundits are already peddling the story as truth. Host John Gibson: “Sen. Rick Santorum announcing a startling find … In fact, WMDs were found in Iraq.”

Edited on Wed Nov-15-06 11:57 PM by BleedingHeartPatriot
She was seven or eight, she wanted one and she got it, because it seemed pretty harmless and cute.

She has always been an avid reader and really enjoyed their books about girls in various eras.

That was ten years ago, though. Maybe the company's changed.

Flame away. MKJ

edited to add: She never had any interest in having matching doll outfits. We both figured that was for three year olds and younger, who didn't get the "nerdiness" of matching one's clothes with one's doll. MKJ

Sorry, but I laughed when I saw it and I still find it amusing now.

Someone needs to teach those kids the basics of winning and losing. You don't cry when you lose a football game and you don't cry when you lose an election. It's not the end of the world for millionaire Rick Anal-Lube Santorum.

Leave the kids out of it? Why? Because they're kids? So what. Fact is these kids are going to grow up privileged while the rest of the middle class subsists on dog food. I can only hope they rebel and do NOT take after their father. The chances of that happening may not be so small, now that I think of it.
