2. I want to prohibit corporations from owning corporations.
Edited on Wed Nov-15-06 08:05 PM by TahitiNut
It's simple. A corporation is property. Property can't own property. Your dog can't own your home. Treat corporations as property and prohibit them from owning property.

Enron was a tangle of over 500 corporations - a shell game of legal fictions meant solely to game the regulations. Stop it!

7. Just tossing this out there, I often see folks in threads wanting
to ban or restrict things, but they never put it all in one place. I am not a big fan of restricting many things, but some things probably should be. What they are and why would be interesting to know.

When I say I want to BAN unbalanced broadcasting, I do NOT mean ONLY the broadcasting of UNBALANCED PEOPLE (Mr. Limbaugh, please pick up the WHITE courtesy telephone).

No, I really mean BROADCASTING that does not contain BALANCE!

WHAT I REALLY WANT IS A RETURN OF THE "FAIRNESS DOCTRINE"!!!!!!!

15. I'd like to see a law passed...
that restricts govermnent regulation of private and consensual behaviours that cause no harm to anyone but the person or persons engaging in them, personally.

You want to smoke? Fine, just do it in legally designated areas, outdoors, in your car or your own home. You want to hire a prostitute? Fine. Taxed, and regulated, with regular health checkups and mandatory rubbers, I have no problem with that. You want to smoke weed? Fine again. Taxed and regulated, with controlled distribution that cuts out organised crime, and as long as you're not toking and driving, I'm good with that, too. You want to worship YHVH, Jesus, Allah, Shivah, Krishna, Thor, Minerva, the Great Spirit, or all of the above? Go ahead--keep your religion out of my government and I'll vote to keep my government out of your religion.

Of course I'm aware that the basic idea and the things it covers are far too sensible to ever have a chance at passing into law.

16. War Profiteering
Let's have some stronger disclosures about companies that do business with the government... it's not enough that President X doesn't own any defense stock, the ban must include immediate family and in-laws, too. A ten year ban on taking jobs with defense contractors after you leave public service.

18. Shoving their religious beliefs down everyone else's throats.
I respect everyone's right to hold whatever beliefs they choose. Just don't try to force it on everyone else.

If you want prayer in your child's school, send your child to a private religious school. If you don't have the money for that, then get those generous, giving Christians to give you whatever financial assistance you need for it.

I don't want anything forced on anybody. I just want everyone to have their individual rights respected.

If they commit an egregious enough crime, corporations should be stripped of their charters, their assets forfeited and their Boards of Directors banned from ever serving on another board for life.

21. Definitely those damn Confederate flags...
Nobody's more tolerant than me of other people's sensitivities and rights, but those f'ing ignorant southern redneck racist bigots and their f'ing flags have got to go. One of their kind actually had the balls to put up a Confederate flag in an area that people could see and, I gotta tell you, it made me see red. First, let's make sure these people can't display their vile beliefs. And then we can work on re-educating all of those PoSs so that we eliminate their bigotry and other bad thoughts or f'ing else.

It's hard being part of the big tent. And, btw, I like zoos!

I have some news for you:

Redneck Racist Bigots are NOT confined to the South.

Nor are Confederate-flag flyers confined to the South!

Granted, many are but there are a lot of us who are anything but.
And many of the rednecks are like that only because they are fed a steady dose of hate propoganda from the corporate media and the religous right.Bring back the fairness doctrine will do a lot to nulify the programing.Seperating religon from politics would also have an impact.

26. A few things
Smoking in public accomodations
Tax money going to religious organizations for charity work.
Bans of same-sex marriage (yes, I want to ban the bans)
Discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation (even though most of it is discrimination on the basis of sex and therefore already should be illegal)
Discrimination on the basis of transsexuality (even though this is, by definition, discrimination on the basis of sex and therefore already should be illegal)

32. What would I ban?
Hmmm...

I would revoke the tax-exempt status of religious organizations. Sorry, but too many of them are politicking and preaching hate.

I'd start cracking down on religious organizations that hide criminal behavior (Pope Benedict XIV, please pick up the RED courtesy phone).

Smoking would be restricted to outdoors and private homes and autos. But as a courtesy, if you are on a narrow, crowded sidewalk, say, in Adams Morgan (my 'hood in DC), and you can't walk two steps without having to dodge a person walking in the opposite direction, you might want to reconsider lighting a cigarette, okay? I really don't want to bump up against someone's ember and risk burning myself. And wherever you are, do NOT throw your fucking butt on the ground and let it continue burning. Have the decency to snuff your poison delivery system and toss it in the garbage can. The world is not your ashtray, asshole.

Now, here are laws I would pass:

Any two unrelated people who want to get married can get married. If you are a church who opposes this, you don't have to perform the damn ceremony. There are religious institutions that are willing to marry same-sex couples. The couple's relationship must be recognized in all 50 states.

Marijuana would be legalized and taxed.

Prostitution would be legalized, stringently regulated, and taxed.

Pharmacies cannot deny birth control on "moral objections." If you have moral objections to filling prescriptions for birth control, you're in the wrong field.

Insurance companies that cover Viagra and all its sequels must also cover all birth control devices.

Tampons, pads, and other devices for a woman's monthly bills would be tax-exempt.

ban folks from harassing women who happen to be breast-feeding in public? That's a great idea for a ban. I say we take it NATION WIDE. (Risser actually wanted to fine people $200 a pop for bugging the ladies trying to feed the children in peace, too, and I would LOVE to see the ignorant, Puritanical hypocrites who want to harass women and their lunching infants have to pay money for pulling that shit.) Also, can we ban not loving Fred Risser? Thank you.
