I wonder if monogamy is even necessarily central to K selected populations* such as humans. I don't feel it matters whom people sleep with as long as they get the societal job done with due respect for democratic principles. All the rest is bullshit.
*The alternatives of producing many offspring with little parental care or few offspring with greater parental care are among properties often ascribed to differences between what are called r and K selection strategies. In organisms such as bacteria and plant weeds that tend to exhibit rapid populational growth in facing wildly fluctuating environmental challenges and opportunities, reproductive emphasis is placed on a rapid rate of increase (r), and individuals in such populations are therefore considered to be r-selected.
