The rethugs picked Trent Lott today as their Minority Leader, the same fellow from Mississippi who was booted from the Senate Majority position in 2002 for saying:

"I want to say this about my state: When Strom Thurmond ran for president, we voted for him. We're proud of it. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn't have had all these problems over all these years, either."

Stom Thurmond was a racist and segregationist, his party ran (in 1948) under a platform that declared in part, "We stand for the segregation of the races and the racial integrity of each race."

OK, so the rethugs pick this prick. And they don't give a shit about his racist ways because the rehugs want to regain POWER - period! Lott is known for being a wheeler & dealer. He can dish out the slime with the best of them.

On to Murtha.

At face value, he has taken positions opposite what many here at DU believe (myself included).

He is pro-life, anti gun control, and even voted to drill in the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge! He has one of the most conservative voting records of any House Democrat over the past 20 years. Yuk! But, he has been hawkish AGAINST the debacle in Iraq. More then most! Murtha was not even on my radar till he moved to center stage with his anti-war stance.

So on the merits of his voting record, some may argue he does not stand for the soul of the party.

Then why are Dennis Kucinich and Nancy Polosi endorsing him? BECAUSE THEY UNDERSTAND WHAT IT WILL TAKE TO WIN IN 08!

We need to keep the heat on the rethugs from the left of our party (Pelosi) and the right (Murtha). A lethal left/right punch combo! Good on ya Nancy for having the wisdom and guts to pick Murtha. That has teeth. Like Murtha or not, we need him to win in 08! And he will keep the rethugs on the defensive. Yea, now its our turn to set the agenda - and save our country at the same time. Go Pelosi, Go Murtha!

1. Great post and I agree. We Dems need Murtha now to fight
wholeheartedly against this war. He is conservative, hawkish, respected, and right! He's not running on his other positions; I don't agree with all of them either. But this war is the issue we have to address and hopefully make positive changes.
