The Oscar Documentary Shortlist was announced yesterday, the Academy will pick five nominees |
|
from these 15. My film, Can Mr. Smith Get to Washington Anymore? is among the 15. There are some terrific movies on the list. We are ecstatic to be in this company. When I look at the other names, we are the ultimate underdog candidate; kind of appropriate for the subject matter of our movie.
15 Docs Advance in 2006 Oscar® Race Beverly Hills, CA — The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced that 15 films in the Documentary Feature category will advance in the voting process for the 79th Academy Awards®. Eighty-one pictures had originally qualified in the category.
The 15 films are listed below in alphabetical order:
“Blindsight” “Can Mr. Smith Get to Washington Anymore?” “Deliver Us from Evil” “The Ground Truth” “An Inconvenient Truth” “Iraq in Fragments” “Jesus Camp” “Jonestown: The Life and Death of People’s Temple” “My Country, My Country” “Shut Up & Sing” “Sisters in Law” “Storm of Emotions” “The Trials of Darryl Hunt” “An Unreasonable Man” “The War Tapes”
The Documentary Branch screening committee viewed the eligible documentaries in a preliminary round of screenings. Documentary Branch members will now select the five 2006 nominees from among the 15 titles on the shortlist.
Nominations for the 79th Academy Awards will be announced on Tuesday, January 23, 2007, at 5:30 a.m. PST in the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.
Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2006 will be presented on Sunday, February 25, 2007, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live by the ABC Television Network at 5 p.m. PST, beginning with a half-hour arrival segment.

2. I have a slightly different and selfish view on that. |

An Iconvenient Truth is the clear leader for the award.

7. When I look at the other films on the list, our chances are |
|
pretty slim, but at least we made it this far.

4. Wow, congrats! That's quite an honor! |
|
Does this mean you get to go to the ceremony?
BTW, will your film be available on Netflix? I just checked, and they only have the original Mr. Smith and "Mr. Smith Gets a Hustler." LOL.

10. You have to be one of the five nominees to get to the ceremony. |

My wife is in quite a quandry now. She wants to start looking at dresses, but doesn't want to suffer the disappointment of finding something she loves and then not being able to go.
We show on PBS as part of the ITVS Doc Series on February 27, 2007. DVDs will be available the next day.

8. My wife and I are both in shock..... |
|
This was our first foray into filmmaking. She spent two years teasing me endlessly for all the time I was wasting on something that no one would ever see.
I think our main competition is Shut Up and Sing and The Trials of Darryl Hunt. There are a few on the list that already have nominations locked up.

I'd like to see your film. I'm a documentary slut. I sit and watch The Documentary Channel constantly, when I'm not watching MSNBC or IFC. I know the backlash is setting in, but I really enjoy seeing actual events. Gore is almost certain to win this one, and he deserves it, but there are some great films on that list.

I am just trying to enjoy this moment and not even thinking about a nomination. The odds are so slim that we get one and I don't want to diminish where we got by having my expectations too high.

Not to menton that some really good docs aren't even on there. This was a very good year for that genre.
