what a Jesus doll should say |
|
I put this at the end of another post but I thought it was important enough to share on it's own. If I made a Jesus doll, instead of saying "you must be born again" I think the doll should say these things:
1) It's fun to share your toys with your friends. 2) We should be nice to others. 3) We should treat others the way we want to be treated. 4) God loves you and so don't I. 5) God wants us to help other people. 6) It's important to share our food with people who are poor. 7) Love your enemies and pray for those who want to hurt you.
That's a doll that I can live with.

2. "Be nice to people, even if they aren't nice to you." |
|
I think kids would get that more easily than "We should treat others the way we want to be treated."

7. How about "What part of 'Thou shalt not kill' did you not understand." |
|
I had a recent argument with a fundamentalist over this and a few other things. Apparently, it's OK to disregard the Commandments and Jesus's teachings when it comes to certain wars and the death penalty because we can't understand why God does things.

9. The argument usually is that "Thou shalt not |
|
commit murder" was wrongly translated as "Thou shalt not kill." That could be so. But the Ten Commandments are in the Old Testament, pre-dating Jesus.
The Gospel of St. Matthew is the first book of the New Testament. From the 22nd Chapter of Matthew:
The "them" referred to in verse 35 is the Pharisees, who were trying to trip Jesus up.
35.And one of them, a doctor of the law, asking him, tempting him:
36 Master, which is the greatest commandment in the law?
37 Jesus said to him: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, and with thy whole soul, and with thy whole mind.
38 This is the greatest and the first commandment.
39 And the second is like to this: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.
40 On these two commandments dependeth the whole law and the prophets.
Based on this, we can reason that if you "love thy neighbor as thyself," you certainly will not kill thy neighbor. Any fundamentalist should know these two great commandments that Jesus gave. However, he will probably argue that Jesus didn't mean it that way!
