NYT coverage of Abizaid's Senate hearing has Lieberman taunting Dems
With Politics as Subtext, Senators Clash on Iraq
By KATE ZERNIKE
Published: November 16, 2006

....There was the self-described “Independent Democrat — capital I, capital D,” who is at risk of bolting and taking his party’s new narrow majority with him. (Was that red tie a hint?)...

***

...no sooner had Mr. Levin outlined his case for a phased pullout of troops beginning in four to six months than the new Independent Democratic hero of the hawkish wing, Senator Joseph I. Lieberman of Connecticut, began acting the role of cross-examiner, leading Gen. John P. Abizaid, the top American military commander in the Middle East, to say that such a withdrawal would increase violence and instability.

“I take it by your answer that you profoundly disagree?” Mr. Lieberman asked. With the Democrats, he meant. “We have a window of opportunity and, really, responsibility now, after the election,” he said, “to find a bipartisan consensus for being supportive of the efforts of our troops and our diplomats there to achieve success.”...

***

As Mr. Nelson questioned General Abizaid, the Arizona senator (McCain) stood up to confer with Senator Susan M. Collins, a moderate Republican from Maine. At this, Mr. Lieberman got up and walked to the Republican side to join them in a brief, chuckling huddle, then ambled back to his party’s side with a glance at his colleagues as if to say, “You watching?”

In his questions, Mr. Lieberman noted that he was “picking up on” points Mr. McCain and Mr. Graham had made....

1. yes, I watched it. Lieberman was one of the only lawmakers there, including Rs
that gave Abizaid comfort.

3. A few days ago some blogger suggested that if Joe
moves over to the other side of the senate CT citizens could circulate a recall petition and have another election. From my experience such a recall is not allowed for federal elected officials. Can anyone confirm or deny this idea???

7. Then people of CT who were stupid enough to vote for the
guy (the dems at least) should bite the bullet and tell him to get the get it over with and get the fuck out.

They saddled us with arrogant bastard, they put us in a bad position as far as the Senate goes. But it is what it is. So don't let him keep up his bully act. Dump his friggin' ass for once and for all.

8. Let him
the White House will be easier to take. They will not have a full majority and will have to share power, they will be so bottle necked that it will be alot easier for any Democratic Presidential candidate, we won't have to fight about the 3 arms of Gov't going to one Party.

9. Lieberman's arrogance will probably be
his downfall. No one likes to be taunted and that is exactly what he is doing to the Democrats. His attitude is Look, I can do what I want now because I can always go to the other side. No pun intended but that just isn't kosher.

12. "and our diplomats there to achieve success.”
:wtf:

Have there been any diplomatic efforts by this administration to solve the problems in Iraq? How can he say that with a straight face?

:grr:
