Target: Corporate Media
I think we've pretty much seen the writing on the wall when it comes to the corporate media. They're doing everything in their power to disable the new Democratic majority in Congress.

The media seems to think that the arm twisting and other maneuvers the Republicans used to get their members to vote in unison should be the way it is. Dissent and disagreement is presented as a sign of fractured loyalties and broken ideology.

But dissent and disagreement are a huge part of what being Democratic is all about. The Republican "with us or against us" policy is the one that's anti-Democratic.

As is the propaganda churned out by the corporate media.

Media Matters already calls them on their bullshit. It's time the rest of us joined in and made THIS a priority. We need to break their stranglehold on information passed to the general public, and make it clear that they're using their singular ability to reach into the homes and minds of the people to interfere with the political process in subtle and not-so-subtle ways.

We need to start sending LTTEs everywhere--to all the media outlets that might print them, and get this message out.

**************

"DO NOT TRUST the information you're receiving from all the outlets you've been taught to trust. THEY ARE PLAYING YOU.

Pay attention to the language they use and compare it to what they were saying and how they were saying it over the past ten years. Compare the way they portrayed the Republicans with the way they're portraying the Democrats.

Do it. Or continue to be fooled."

**************

It's come to the point that they're poisoning the very wellspring of Democracy to such an extent that liberty will wither on the vine if they're not stopped. WE can stop them. We HAVE to stop them.

We may be the only ones that can. They have the power to disrupt the process in the very halls of power. Only we the people can turn the tide.

If we have the will and the courage.

They know the danger we present to them. They all do. That's why they rail against the "bloggers" and the "fringe." Because WE exercise the power the rest of the population has forgotten.

We will NOT be silenced.

2. We need to break more than stranglehold on information passed to the general public
We need to break up the few networks delivering mainstream news. Could Howard Dean help? When he was running he talked about breaking up those corporations. You saw what happened to him. I never saw - other than the blackout on the stolen election in 04 - the hammering they did on him like no other.

Isn't a lot of this slander?

The Iraq propaganda is outrageous. The slamming of the dems in the house is total nonsense. It's called voting and what's this division?

3. Necessity is the mother of invention...
we need to invent a new way of communicating information useful to a healthy society. Perhaps we are here. Some people hold on to old ways of doing things long after their usefulness has waned.

15. We can even start small. I have a bulletin board on my office
door and it always has something newsworthy or provocative on it, whether cartoon or article. Anything to get folks to stop and THINK!

a few years back where I cut and pasted news stories and dropped them at supermarkets, etc., I tend to bum people out, or assault their conscience which I think was not such a good way to go...now I'm thinking about how I could inform in a subtle way, almost as a tease to stimulate the 'need to know' and then have directions as where to find. Part of me thinks the solution is already here...it just hasn't sunk in or caught on...or has it? Who would tell me if the masses got their news from the internet?

16. I've been waiting!
I've been waiting for someone to bring this up. It's true! We have a practically instantaneous, unrestricted (so far), historically unprecedented, worldwide communication network technology already in place. All that's needed now is a think tank with some very smart people involved who could be inventive enough to come up with novel ways to use the internet as THE super-highway for getting the facts out. Undercut the media bastards and send them home in a box. Where are all the geniuses? The engineers? The inventors? The organizers among us? Has everything been thought of already???

History gets made when the right people start talking to each other.

4. This is so important. I been thinking about this all day with all
the fuss over Mertha's past all day long. The media never spent so much time on the ethics of the republicans. Even when they could no longer ignore it they gave it little time. We have to be better and cleaner because they will destroy us with every little flaw.

5. Unfortunately we have some Dem leaders who are easily convinced by mediaspin
and echo them at every opportunity out of fear that they will be next.

A vicious circle of empowering the media by agreeing with even their most blatant spin against fellow Democrats instead of joining together to fight the spin and the lies.

... and now that you have opened this topic for discussion, I wonder if we DUers can't get together and organize something.

What I have in mind is a massive email, letter, postcard, fax and phone-call blitz of various media outlets -- coordinated to be done on the SAME DAY.

I would suggest January, as all of us (let's face it) will be busy between now and the end of the year, with various family obligations, entertaining, etc.

We all often send our irate emails to CNN, ABC, etc. - but we do so on an uncoordinated basis, as a particular outrage gets on our nerves and we act. But what if ALL of the offending outlets were hit on the same day with hundreds of thousands of communications from pissed-off people -- hey, it might even make THE NEWS!

Everyone interested could compose their email at any point between now and the designated January date -- edit it, tweak it, change it as something new gets on your last nerve -- and store it in your Drafts folder. Then, on one day, everyone hits the SEND button.

Emails (faxes, letters, etc.) could be personal and detailed -- or simply a variation on "We're mad as HELL, and we're not going to take it any more!"

Individual comments wind up being ignored -- but a MASSIVE amount of irate communucations in a 24-hour period are bound to be noticed.

14. Great idea, Nance...
A coordinated effort to swamp them WOULD be a good idea. Hard to do it on the same day, precisely, because the USPS isn't exactly a model of efficiency  but we could all MAIL the stuff on the same day.

We could call it a national "Up the Media" campaign.
